Its going slow.

We had to go and buy some longer bolts to fit the engine on to the stand, and also return some faulty tools back to the shop.

Some things I noticed when now the engine is out.

The turbos are not the same age. One is a nice clean silver colour and the other is an old iron colour. Why only 1 was changed I dont know. It was a company car for a very long time and that is the sort of thing a company would do on car repairs.

On the final pic. Notice how all the intakes going to the right are covered in oil.

There is also an aluminum oil tube which goes from the EGR all the way round to the front of the plenum on both sides. Both where completely blocked and I think are blocked quite a bit down the line too. I will have to soak them to clean it before the engine goes back in.

Also one of the PCV hoses had as split in it. Not huge but enough to lose a little oil.

Just thought I would share this with you.

Stuart

P.S.

Sorry Smithy not got the tubs off yet. Will be tomorrow.

Yeah it is the Machine Mart on Kirbs. My dad ordered it on line and 10 days later they it didnt arrive dispite saying 7 days delivery. We canceled the delivery and then went to Bolton and picked one up.

Yeah we have got bits every where. you dont realise how much is on the car until you take it off. We had to put parts in a neighbours garage.

Plus having 2 sets of wheels in there doesnt help.

I just hope I remember what goes where when putting it back together.

I would have got those bolts from you Mike. We got our own stand because my dad wants one for a motor bike engine he is doing too. We tried to put the engine on the stand this morning and found the bolt problem. It was easier to go and get them ourselves. I didnt know if you was at home or at work or anything. Plus one of the bell housing bolts was missing  and we needed to get another one. Some one in the past crossed threaded the bolt putting it back on and probably left that bolt out as it wasnt going in correctly. We cut the thread again and bought a new bolt.

Nice one Stuart. Hope it all goes well for you. Fancy doing mine when your finished ;)

Now why would anyone take a perfectly nice engine out in the first place !!!???

FFS Stu DON'T unblock the EGR pipes - thats exactly how they came out of the factory!!!! If you look closer you'll see they vent out the sides instead of the ends ;)

LOL.

I know Andy, the the side ones which where completely blocked.

When I looked at them at first, I wondered why the hell it was just a pipe with no opening. Then after giving the pipe a little wipe with the cloth I relised there was meant to be an opening at the side. I only knew that because when wiping it the pipe went soft in one place, where the opening should be

The engine is old mate. 170,000 miles and it was smoking slightly. However the smoking problem has been discovered.

The compression test I did a few months ago showed 2 cylinders where within the recomended levels and only just. The other 4 where well below with either 1 or 2 below 100psi :(

I think this engine will be more powerful just by making things work correctly.

Stuart

Just remove the damn EGR - its a crap idea anyway ;)

Good luck mate. (You can always sell the bits left over on Ebay ;) )

If you need a lift with anything give me a shout.

(Can't fix engines but can make a nice cuppa :D )
