Do you have an induction kit mate ? this is the most common cause of getting damp/wet inside the AFM, it will dry out by it self, but if you want to pseed it along it means removing the headlight panel and removing the induction kit in one go (very simple) and maybe lightly blowing the warm air from a hair dryer in there.

If that's the case of course, lol

cheers guys , yes running a blitz sonic induction kit , maybe its that i never take it out in the rain either , bugger bugger bugger all because we ran out of milk ....PTU going duff sounds serious i hope its not that .............wouldnt know where to look to find it at the moment ..........is there any links as to what to do if it is the PTU

the tickover is fine nice and even but when i put the throttle on it drops dies and revs up very slowly sounding as though its running on a few pots then evens out again , would that put me in safety boost ??

Maybe still a few drops of wet on the air flow meter. Once it dries it should be OK no?

ive left it for a while just ticking over , got the engine nice and warm

revved it up and backfire backfire big BANGS ........sounds serious to me

it seems to be revving ok but when holding at say 2000 rpm its missing and hunting all over the place and the engine check light is still

on is thsi still caused by the damp ( I hope ) ...........is this normal guys ?

If you have really drenched the air filter then it will be wet inside and any moisture in the AFM will stay there. I think you should take off the panel between the lights and take off the filter and dry it properly then get a splash guard or similar before refitting or dont drive it in this very wet weather. Otherwise it'll keep wetting the AFM coil gizmo which is very small. Then the ecu does not know how much air the engine is swallowing and cant match the fuel properly hence backfires etc. It might even damage the AFM sensor permanently.

Is your z an early model (89-90), they were well

known for the ptu messing up, however......it can

be repaired if you know someone who is handy with

a soldering iron, think the info is somewhere on

http://www.300zx.org (not sure though!), ths is the worst

case scenario though, sounds like you've just got

damp through the filter, try resetting the ecu. :hyper:

Pull the error codes from the ECU then you know WHY the check light is on.....

ok guys thanks for the info , how do i get at the error codes ? its a manual box 92 J spec model i dont have a conzult ...i will take of the centre panel and check the AFM

i dont know wher the PTU is at the moment , still bit of a zed vigin TBH

it was going to go to zedworld for a full top and tails this time home as well , darent even drive it to the pub now ......hope i can sort it quickish ,

regards

Can anyone tell me what a splashguard looks like?

I got a uk car and think I got one ( a large plastic tray under radiator??) but Im sort of having lots of probs and it seems to be when it rains

The splash guard is attached to the bumper bar and sits just below the filter...

Oops - I think that'd be a no then

If I take off my headlamp panel I can see straight down to the oil cooler etc

should that be blocked off?

Should be a bit of black corrugated plastic under the filter to help avoid water spray blowing up onto it. You can prolly make up something to do the same thing and keep the filter dry

This sounds similiar to what I am experiencing but have dried out filter and MAF and still the same could be the PTU?? Also mine is a 92 J spec??

More than likely PTU. Explain your symptons exactly.

MAF problems will mean either normal or rough running under about 2000rpm, very rough running 2k - 3k and wont run at all above 3000RPM.

My problems all start when I slow down and the revs drop beneath 3k ish with coughing and spluttering and gurgling. I thought it might have been the MAF so I left it in a warm place over night as well as the filter just incase moisture had got in but no difference??
