How do I recognise detonation?

Featured Replies

Listenfor a metallic knocking noise at high revs (6500),

especially under load.

Hmm...

I dunno

Glen.

The americans usually say that it sounds like "pebbles in a can".

I think it's a pretty good description.

If you listen carefully to the engine, you will notice

this odd sound.

Maciej

right then...

my other car (capri) has pinking every time i drive it so here goes....

Your Mission If you chose to accept it:

STAGE 1

Get a bottle of pop (lemonade or something) open it, and then put your ear next to the top and listen to the sound, remeber the sound. Be prepared to 'look like your reading the label' just incase someone walks in on you.

STAGE 2

Walk to your car tom cruise-cool style (extra points for pulling off a forward roll)

get in your car whilst putting on your sunglasses, drive the car around for about 10min try and reach 180MPH, slowdown and stop

using a skidy-donut thing (especialy if people are watching) then pop the bonnet.

STAGE 3

get out your car doing a gun roll and open the hood now put your ear next to the engine and noitce the sound (if any), if its detonating (pinking) you will hear the same-kind-of pop-ting-ting-ting-pop-TING-etc... Warning do not put your ear on the engine as it might melt it. (your ear)

Thus ends your mission breifing

Hmmm lol i somehow dont think that is too correct but funny as hell lol

And i quote "DETONATION

Detonation is caused by the actual compression of the mixture to a level where it reaches the Auto-ignition point, becoming an uncontrollable explosion, the point at which this takes place varying from fuel to fuel, hence the use of additives to vary this point.

The explosion takes place without the aid of any local hot spots, including the plug itself, and again is out of time with piston movement.

A further cause and a frequent one at that is a small pocket of fuel, after normal ignition has taken place, getting further compressed by the explosion in the cylinder head in addition to that of the mechanical compression, then igniting, after the normal ignition point, so out of time, causing the well known "pinking" effect and in a severe case mechanical destruction of the engine.

The amount of destruction is to some extent dependent on the actual shape of the cylinder head and the space available for the pocket of fuel to collect.

If the pocket that is formed is relatively large, then the force of this very highly compressed fuel exploding can do mechanical damage, but if on the other hand it is small it may not do so, but it can, and will, form a local heat spot, which in turn will cause pre-ignition.

" Now that i have explained detonation i shall move on to establishing if your engine is detonating.... pleas pay 35 pounds into my account lol

WaZZa,

Be careful mate, I spoke to some of the 200 ladZ at SE open day and they tend to know quite a bit about tuning eXtreme! Know what I mean???

Tim

;-)

when i run on 4star hardly any pinking

when i run on "lead replacement" i have lots,

and when i put unleaded in it buggers the car

soooo....i thought it had to do with the

1.timing

2.levels of lead (more the better)

?????
