HELP...........PLEASE :(

I was driving home in my 1992 Nissan ZX TT auto (UK Car) and went to drive uphill onto a sliproad. Suddenly the ABS and HICAS lights came on and the steering became very heavy. I pulled over and tried to re-set the "fault" by switching off the ignition and attempted to re-start the car. This I could not do and my car had to be towed back to my house. The AA engineer thought it was my alarm/ immobiliser but this was checked and found to be working correctly. Other people have said it may be the auto transmission inhibitor switch, the speed sensor, the started motor. All very good suggestions but where do I start. My car is currently of the road and if there any good mechanics in the Leicestershire area who think they can fix this problem, do let me know and I will be eternally grateful....Here's hoping!! :(

I'm in Leicester and to be fair i've only ever taken my Zed to Zedworld in Tamworth (see traders section).

 

I had something quite similar and found it to be my altenator was not chargeing.

Hopefully I can get someone out to look at this problem today (hoping and praying!!). The car appears "dead". It won't even turn over so I am unsure if it is the PTU. Knew I should have taken a car maintenance course.

Did the car turnover when you tried to restart the car for the first time the problem occurred ?

 

if not, it's probably your alternator or battery

recharge the battery (or use another full battery) and start the car and measure the voltage between + and - with the engine running, voltage should be between 13-14 volt and if it's lower your alternator has a problem.

I eventually found the fault. I was able to get underneath and short out the starter motor and the car was able to turn-over. I knew the problem had to be somewhere between the fuse box and starter motor. It now appears that the 3rd tier of fuses (ABS, HICAS etc) under the dash have no power going to them whatsoever, therefore I need to get behind the fuse box to determine whether or not there is a wire off completely, a fractured connection or if there is a relay that powers that particular tier of fuses, has failed. Still more to do!! :confused:

I traced the fault to a relay, which does indeed power the tier of fuses affected (amongst other things). After I sourced a new relay and re-fitted the fuse box, etc, the car is now starting and operational again.

HURRAH!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Looks like I've got a similar problem with my car :cry:

 

Drove home last night & noticed that the Hicas light came on followed a few minutes later by the ABS light. I didn't read too much into it until later I also noticed that the stereo kept turning itself off as well!. Also, come to think of it, the steering seemed to get quite heavy.

 

A while after this, the engine wouldn't rev over 2500 rpm, it started misfiring like hell. Luckily I managed to find a parking space & park it up successfully. Lucky really cos otherwise I would have been stuck with a 1.5ton piece of metal blocking the whole street off at 00:30am! Doubt I could have shifted it on my own.

I turned the engine off & tried to start it again but it didn't want to know!

Yep alternator has stopped charging - for some reason the abs and hicas are the first to fail as the battery dies. Stereo going on and off is a CLASSIC sign of low juice :)

Worth checking all the wiring first ;)
