As i live in London and i now have tennis leg i'm thinking of getting an auto over a turbo.

Which is quicker manual or auto......

Opinions and reasons please....

I know johnboy has had both & he said the manual is deffo faster ;)

Yeah but he had a duff one, lol. :slap: ;)

The thrill of a kick down from 4 - 2 or 3 - 1 is awesome - something manuals dont really have, as the gearchange is sudden and really boots you in the back,

I know better than to reason with the unreasonable (by which I mean auto owners :smw: ) but...

This is bobbins. Quick downshifts are quite easy in a Z (although less so with stock drivetrain) and 5th to 2nd at 40 is TREMENDOUS. If you're careful with the throttle you don't really see any lag, and all that luvverly power ends up at the wheels not as a floor heater...

I reckon it feels slower in a manual through perception... cos you've changed gear yourself you're more ready for it so it doesn't feel like quite such a kick. Does that make sense to you hairdressers?

Auto seems quicker when driving normally as when you floor it the powers always there.

How many times have you dropped to first gear on a manual at 30 mph ?? Dosent happen.

Does on an auto though.

In the end it down to personel preference, manual more of a drivers car, but I still seem to prefer the auto for power slides and town driving.

You've contradicted yourself there...

You like the auto because it drops to first when driving hard... and then you say it "never happens" on a manual. The point is you can do what you like in a manual, so if it never happens that would be down to you, not the car!

Might also add that 1st and 2nd are shorter in a manual than an auto. So when the auto drops into first you'd have to change into gear one-and-a-half to get the same effect in a manual.

Good to see a post from someone who has both though!

I can see why an auto might be easier for drifting, one less thing to concentrate on...

I box change from 4th to 2nd quite often - when I've been following someone dawdling on a country road and they turn off. :D (I don't tend to use 5th unless I'm going to be over 50ish for a while but I know some ppl on here would be in 5th at 40.)

So as i'm testing out an auto Saturday what should i look for or listen for changing up and down??????

Alex - its should be v v smooth, no noises other than the revs changing. Changing down you dont really notice at all.

Not a good day for test driving lol

It is accepted that an auto loses loads of power in the torque converter but the manual needs 3 gear changes by 100mph

A manual TT is perfectly capable of 100 in 3rd. You'd probably change up a little bit before if you were continuing to 150... but if you're doing a standing quarter you wouldn't. Got the choice, see? Admittedly it takes a lot of self-control to stay in 3rd until 7000 but even that's not quite the redline...

So the power lost in the torque converter is roughly equivalent to 0.6 seconds to 100mph - big deal.

Now that I would probably agree with! (And post that video pleeeeease)

Basically, I like the manual because it gives more control which opens up a whole new range of silly things to do in it, and I bought the car as weekend car not a daily driver. I've no objection to autos but I object to the rubbish -some- speak about why they are "better". This time around the debate is quite insightful, so I'll forgive the slush box boys just this once...

Barry, easy answer to your point: don't change gear and steer at the same time... unsettles the car (usually straight into the nearest tree.) An auto might decide to change gear for you of course. :D

(One way to start a drift is to unsettle the car on purpose with a harsh gear change, but I'll stick to brake-induced or power ta... I quite like my clutches to last more than 5000 miles!)

Now who wants to explain to me why left-foot braking is good... I never understood that! :slap:

By the way, russtic... yer a wuss. :) But make sure you undo the seat belt BEFORE you open the door to leap out cos mine's a Series I!

We haven't got a chance! :p So basically you object to listening to the other side of the debate lol?

;)

Theres no advantage to having 5th over the auto's 4th :p

Alex - I'm not aware of any differences between the years :) Most cars around are 90/91 anyway.

So why does a Manual do better MPG officially?

Read the manual

Who cares? I would rather have 6mpg than own a gear crunching clutch eating *********************:D;)

I said I wasn't listening to any rubbish - if you believe I'm not listening to you then, well, what does that imply? ;)

Anyway, I'm just automatically gainsaying any statement you make - I think you want "reasoned debate," it's the room next door but one...

Oh I will have soon

Alex - I found one auto I drove had a hard time chosing between first and second when I was bumbling along between 30 and 40 mph - Auto owners might tell me it was a fault - it certainly wasn't the tidiest zed I've seen.

and before anyone slags me off for even looking at an auto - the ad didn't specify which box it had (personal pet hate of mine, that!) and I popped in out of curiosity and was offered a drive striaght away - OK!

Drive them both and make your decision, oh, if you choose the auto YOUR WRONG!

Not like manual clutches then? :p Autoboxes can take more BHP than manuals through them

I think you mean autoboxes can take more bhp than manual clutches!

The boxes can take 600bhp +

Yeah least I can change into what gear I want

Pages and pages of posts of

"My Auto wont go into 2nd"

"I only have 1 gear"

"My autobox is broken"

"How much for a auto rebuild?"

"How do you do a Auto manual conversion"

"This is the 2nd box in 2 years"

"Im in gear but have no power"

Ok i see the choice buy a manual and you will need a new clutch......eventualy or buy an auto and you will need a new gearbox........eventually.

Anyone want to confirm or deny the earlier cars i.e. 89 90 had more problems with the autoboxes?????????

Stuart - there is one every week because there are more cars with autoboxes in use than the neanderthal manuals.

Does it really matter which transmission is best? It’s always going to devolve into personal preference - If I’d wanted a car with a manual box then I guess I would have bought one – for the use I intend to put my Zed too I wanted an auto, I wanted leather interior and it had to be black (I might have settled for red). And that is what I bought.

So why does a Manual do better MPG officially?

Read the manual

I believe the auto gives worse mpg because it uses more energy to power the gearbox, hence this is why autos lose more bhp in tranmission losses at RR days than Manuals!

.

I could teach a neanderthal how to drive an auto quicker than you could teach one to drive manual

We all know how to drive manuals perfectly well, but I bet half the manual drivers dont know how to drive autos ;)

Therefore auto = better.

There's some rubbish for ya Mr Evans

Autos dont get as abused as manuals (as a rule) no harsh 3000rpm clutch dropping starts.....

You havn't seen Ryan driving.

what a load of tosh when you put your foot down in an auto (to the floor) it will not change gear untill red line in every gear , how many Manwells leave the gear change untill the red line :p ;) not many I bet
