Hi everyone, first post :)

I hope to be getting a Z soon, I currently drive a v6 ford probe, and have a set of CAM 264 Alloys, 18", with 235/35 tyres on.

Could anyone tell me if my PCD 114.3 and offset 38 will be OK with the Z ?

Also, is there anything to look out for when buying one? I would ideally like a manual twin turbo, how rare are they (like supra rare or what?)

With my budget, 3-7k on car, totalling up to 10k with mods, How much should I expect to achieve with that money?

Good to see a good forum for the 300zx, thats one of the plus points of owning a ford probe ;) (great forum)

Over and out :)

Adam

Considering that a Standard UK has 245/45 I would not put narrower tyres on, or its not recomemended anyway.

£5000-£6000 will get you a good Z, obviously the more you spend the better the quality you should get.

Modded cars dont hold their money very well. You can get a standard Z and one which has had £5000 of mods on it and it wouldnt cost that much more.

If you put your location in the profile you may find local people willing to help find a Z.

Thanks for the reply ;)

Location is now in my profile :)

I'm not looking to buy one modded (although im not against it, I meant 10k total after some initial mods, sorry if I wasnt clear :)

What you looking to do in the mods department?

Its easy enough to get 350-380 bhp,

If you are modding, one of the first things you should do is the clutch as it is not designed to do more than standard power.

But even with the standard 245 wheels it wheel spins in 1st and 2nd when the turbos spool up with moderate mods.

As for the 18s. I am not too sure. The Nissan has big calipers and I have struggled finding wheels that will fit and wont cost me an arm and a leg.

Hi there another newbie here,

thanks for the wheel info cos i got 18's on my probe at the mo and will be transfering them on to the Z if and when.....well hen i get it....lol :D

I am looking at a fully modded and kitted Z on a 90 plate with 31,000 miles on it for £9k.....is this good or bad...?

Ford Probe  :slap:

That seems a lot for me especially for a 1990 Z.

Hi mate welcome to the fold... you won't see Alan Partridge driving a Z. ;)

Now it's not often I disagree with Stu, but I think 235 on the front is a good option for 18s. The slightly narrower tyre might prevent tramlining in the same way that 18s tend to do it so it'll all work out beautifully...

It might not be quite as progressive as wider tyres though, and just understeer without actually warning you first though!:nono:

Only matters if you drive everywhere arse-out stylee though.

Offset and PCD are fine. (interesting... bet there's loads of used Probe alloys out there)

Have you got a pic out of curiosity?

UK manuals are fairly rare unfortunately... I looked for three months before I found one at the start of last year. All UKs are TT.

You could get pretty much a minter for 5k these days. :( The other 5k is shedloads considering you've already got alloys. You can do a LOT with 5k. (Only problem is megapower is engine-out and if you're not doing it yourself you're looking at a grand labour.)

If you buy one with almost 60k or almost 120k don't forget the 60k service is quite expensive. (Cam belt and anything else that's dying, which can be quite a few things at that age.)

Now I've been round the loop I wouldn't suggest buying a car with any serious power mods unless you really trust the owner. Having said that there are a few owners on here I'd buy off straight away.

How much power/torque did your Probe have?

Another word on modding... the sensible modder would do brakes and handling and THEN power because these cars have serious torque already!

If you do breathing, chip, boost controller you can get to >350bhp (allegedly). There's a rolling road day this weekend so we might have some real figures from that! Stock tubbies and injectors run out of puff at about 1bar boost.

If you can't find a UK manwell and go for import insurance can be prohibitive. Conversely if you go for auto you NEED an uprated oil cooler for serious power and you need one of these - :slap: :D

That car looks EXPENSIVE to me unless the kit is really minty and the engine has some decent uprated bits (like injectors or turbos or both.)

There you go... back to work...

Ford Probe  :slap:

:slap: Zedman, as H15 says mate, unless you know the car mate, dont make judgements, She is Show winner

Any way enough of that im here cos i am looking at buying a Jap import but it seems to be a bit pricey :(

So i come to the site i think would be best to ansewr the questions..... which i will search first then if i cant see the answers i will ask you kind lot.... :)

Cheers in advance guys & gals

haha @ alan partridge ;)

Thanks for the good advice there, didnt know there werent any UK non-turbo's! Looks like I'm gonna have a job finding a UK spec car that I like! (I do not want auto at all :( )

Zevans,

Thanks for the reply mate, my baby 2.5 V6 probe has only got 206 bhp and 227 Torque, so moving up a notch me thinks is a damm fine idea and i all ways love the look of my old mans ZX when he had a new one.......

Pricey! How much more car do you want for 5k? Seen the price of Supras? The only other competition for performance and handling are supercars and Caterham types!

"Ignored tarmac melter" indeed. :D

Hi Hi5

With your alloys, the offset/pcd sounds ok but not the tyre size.

235 fine for the front but should be "40" profile with 18s

255/35/18 for the rear, at least.

You don't mention the width of the rims either. They must be at least 8 inches wide (yes, I know stock fronts are 7.5 but not many aftermarket 7.5 wide wheels will fit). The Zed has big brake calipers so many popular wheel applications (TSW, BK, Team Dynamics etc) will probably not fit.

Just try ringing companies like WheelBase or South West Tyres - despite the hooj range they stock they only have 3 or 4 types that will fit a Zed. I found only the more expensive wheels (Azev, Wheelmania etc) were ok.

Thats what they look like, and unfortunately they are 7.5's ... bugger :( not good news :(

Hi Hi5

Nice rims, they would suit the Zed. Before you get dissapointed about them only being 7.5ins wide, ring the company to see if they would fit a Zed.

As I said, the stock fronts are 7.5 (+ all round on a j-spec) and whilst many aftermarket rims are at least 8ins wide, they may still be OK if the offset is right. You may be lucky........

If they do fit, you are limited WRT the width of your rear tyres, but as stock J-spec only has 225s all round you could get away with 235/40/18s.

Richard :)

Well I spoke to em, they reckon that basically I'll have to play about with spacers to get the ideal fitment, but are fairly sure I'll be OK, no guaruntee though :) Just have to try it and see :D

Thanks for the replies guys :D
