everyone read this please HELP!!!!!!!!!!!!!

hi everyone, to the people who've helped me over the past few days, a bigthank you to all!

ive checked the timing today with a quality tester (inductive one) off number 1 lead and it's near spot on 15 degrees!

I have no air locks!

running standard boost

TPS is spot on

running on optimax for 4 months. (tt auto 91)

changed plugs to prf6b11 and tryed prf6b11c

on removel of plugs each cylinder seemed to have very tiny metal filings in there (used magnetic screw driver)

I can hear what seems to be a slight rattle on boost at about 2500/4000 revs

the car dos'nt go into saftey boost everytime (now and agian) but i do sometimes get a code 34.

can anyone help me on what to do next.

thank you all

jim :( :( :( :(

have yo tried disconnecting the det sensor to see what happens?

however, the fillings dont sond tooclever.

Metal bits in your cylinder? Possiblities are the turbine in the turbo is wobbling, causing the turbo to scrape the housing inside. The metal parts you are seeing are bits of either the housing or wheel.

Do an oil change and rip open the old oil filter and see if there are any metal peices in there.

Do not drive your car anywhere for a while.

shit sorry to hear bout the iron fillings! maybe take off the hard pipes to see if they contain the fillings too. if so then it sounds like turbos coming to bits and sending the filings into the cylinders. when my turbos were changed the sump had to be changed and it had a fair amount of filings in too.

just before my turbos went bang my car went into safety boost too, although i may not have been running optimax at the time.

agree with stu, defo dont drive it anywhere unless absolutely necessary!

i'll keep my fingers crossed for you mate!

Thanks lads, it's what i thought it would be but hoping it was'nt!

ill give it an oil change, new filter tommorow and look in the filter, and try and take the hardpipes off, it sounds as though it's the passenger side turbo, if it is the turbo will it have done any engine damage and whats going to be the damage to my wallet?

cheers

jim

well i must have driven mine about 30 miles or so after the turbo went before it was fixed and there appears to be no other damage done. ive driven it another 1200 miles since they were changed so i think if there was anything else wrong it would have shown up by now. my advice is just do not drive it at all until its sorted or else you could damage a piston or valve by the little shards of turbo.

as far as cost, it really depends on what you want done. its an engine out job so its gonna be about 700 to a grand prob for that...i think SE nissan do the engine removal and re-fit for 700 and they are recomended by alot of people on here. the main thing is to get someone to do it who has previous experience of these as it is a pretty involved job.

i also chose to get a 60k service done at the same time as its easier with the engine out and if you've got one coming up it makes sence to do that too if you have the spare cash. then theres the choice of turbo...and therefore what you want from the car in the future. my main priority was turbos that wouldn't break again and could take upped boost and de-cat no probs so i went for smithy's stage 1/2 hybrids...the best i could find for anywhere near the money. plus they spool up quick too so ive got a nice responsive reliable car now.

chin up tho mate...its not definite yet! although its showing all the signs i have to say

let me know if you have any questions mate

hi lads thanks all for the info on whats wrong with mine, im going to be taking of the hard pipes sometime this week to see what's in there,

could this be a chance for bigger turbos if so, which ones are the best for autos and if putting bigger tub's on is there anything else i need to do (fueling, airflow etc....)

i have standard airbox with k + n filters and a straight through s/s exhaust.

nearly forgot to ask, when taking the engine out, do you have to remove the auto box first or lift it all out at a tight angle?

there's going to be a few questions on here in the next few months'

a million thanks

I've had the engine out twice and both times left the auto box in the car! can even do it without removeing the bonnet too   ;)

the lastest....and it's good news!

today ive changed the oil used a flush and oil filter changed and it's really clean! (nothing in the filter)

I thought id just remove a couple of spark plugs to have a look in cylinders, (used the car today, about 50 miles). i'd removed a plug and looked in the cylinder, got my magnetic long screw driver, then it dawned on me..........

where the spark plugs seat in the head theres a small ledge when you look directly down there, upon looking today I saw a few bit's sat on the ledge these where the tiny metal filings I thought where coming from my cylinders.

Ive removed my spark plug about 6 times this year, the small filings are from the threded part in the head, and when removed they pull out tiny microscopic bits which in time build up on the ledge. This is why I thought I had tiny filings in each cylinder, is was in fact from the plugs in each clyinder and a small build up down each one, I have cleaned each one with the screw driver down there and theres nothing in the cylinders!

fantsatic, but I still don't know what the rattling is on boost?

reving the car upto 4000 tonight, I could hear something in the exhaust, like a small piece of metal, very faintly, could it be this while im driving?

thanks lads

Jim

Hi Jim,sorry to hear you having problems, when you say you can hear a faint metal sound from exhaust is this sound allso present from engine bay on start up or/and when hot,is the sound in exhaust on one side only, does it sound like a small metallic uneven ticking,is the exhaust note a funny fluttery type noise as well.

hi tony are you ok mate?

one of my exhaust note's is a strange fluttery nosie, but not the side the nosie is coming from or maybe the sound is travelling? form the drivers side to passenger?

it's just a real faint rattle from the passenger side under boost at about 2000/4000 rev's, you can acctually hold the noise there under boost by lifting off slightly, it's when the car is at normal temp.

cheers mate

Jim

Yep me fine Jim,as for this sound, could be one of two things, but ya never know, first the turbo heat shield, found this on my first Z,same kinda noise, was a bit lose, worth checking underneath for anything like that, second, could be a chipped valve or something likewise from top of engine, had this on my engine that came out, slowly things got worse after 8 months, then realy bad smoke but before no real lack in performance till then, hope this helps ya,Tony
