Im looking to get approx 400bhp from my z. What mods would be the best taking into account the following:

UK spec TT 92 manual.

Car is my only mode of transport so needs to be reliable-i travel approx 45 miles a day to and from work.

Budget is limited as most of my money goes on day to day running.

Car is stock at the moment.

Was contemplating induction kit,de-cat pipes and boost upgrade.

Would de cat pipes present a problem with turbo seals? Have heard that the reduced back pressure allows oil to bypass the seals-is this right?

All help and advice greatly appreciated.

My car was RR'd at about 198RWHP at the SE Rolling Road, but then my car is pretty much standard, it only has an induction kit and is running stock exhaust, chip, boost, cats etc

I'm getting RR'd at the day on the 24th too with my car running the same spec (unless I can get SE to return my calls so I can get MAC1's old exhaust fitted ) so it should be interesting to see how the two figures for the two RR days compare.

Mine is a UK Manwell TT btw, although based on those figures it may be an NA :(

Mike, that power is pretty realistic tbh! With transmission losses etc that would put you at around 260bhp crank whic for a 10+year old engine is about right IMO

That's what I thought too.

I'm now off to check if my turbo's have fallen off!

I had 203bhp @ wheels

My gtech has showed around a 10bhp increase since fitting induction kit,

Still not sure if im making thor, im not on the list anyway,

All these magical figures being thrown around. IMHO its all about how the car drives on actual tarmac.

Its nice to be able to say you have 400bhp but not what its all about if you ask me.............did anyone ask me? LOL. :D

Mine dynoed at 326bhp stock and 407 running 1.3 bar with no cats and full exhaust!

So the answer is buy a UK Supra and spend £1500 on bolt ons!!!

Roy, I got 400bhp @ 0.77bar, so shove that up your straight six and smoke it:D :slap:

OK! But how much have you had to spend?

How much more money is a Supra to buy?

Swings and roundabouts IMO.

98 million squillion pounds:eek: :slap:  :D

So what's happening with your car now Adam?

Nail...head...etc etc etc :D

Absolutely spot on - power figures are only for bragging rights! You could have an engine with 4000bhp but only between 6000 and 7000 rpm, with about 50bhp before it! I know thats an extreme example but you get the idea. Drivablility is the key!!!

Turbo High-Tech Performance mag took a stock 350z to 6 different Dyno's in one day,they were curious as to how much various dynos differd,results were;

DYNO HP TQ

DYNAPACK 249.4 242.8

DTS 257.6 556.5(rollers not acountin for gear reduction

DYNOJET(WIN)235.8 227.8

DYNOJET(DOS)243.7 237.2

CLAYTON 265.7 240.6

SUPERFLOW 228.9 226.6

They concluded that "no one dyno is better than the other, you should when upgrading/modding use the same dyno, what is important is the Gains made per addition,it should not take a back seat to peak output"

So,on this basis, all those that were at the previous RR will get a different reading, and all those that have not used the Dynopack will allso get different readings. Will be an interesting outcome:)

Re- installed part of my old setup (the one where I made 400bhp). Cant set it up properly yet due to the headbolts/ gaskets situation, but I did have a quick blast in it set @ 1 bar, and it was hugely quick, plus no detting, no f**king flat spots at 6k rpm and it revs clean wll past the redline:D

Once the heads are sorted, the boosts going back up to 1.4 - 1.5 bar, and its going back on the rollers to see what it makes!

Nice one Adam;) I take it your enthusiasem has returned, you not selling still i hope:)

Cool, hope it all works out for you m8.

That depends on whether or not it behaves itself :D :slap: :D

HTJIM, you won't be able to de-cat yours as it's a 1992 and you have to have cats for the MOT on '92 or newer.

(Someone correct me if I'm wrong)

Should be ok - mine passed without the cats no problem but I had them in the garage ready to go back on just in case... ;)

read my post in the FAQ section!!!

Cats are only needed on post july 92 cars.

However the DOT book for cat equipped cars shows the 300zx as not having cats fitted till 94 therefore they cant be cat tested officially unless you have a post july 94 model

Interesting eh so cats can be removed but what about the turbo seals ? have heard it can affect them

Yeah it can speed up the degrading process of them.

My local station had no DVLA listing for the Z32 so they don't have to worry about cats!

LOL *NO* dvla listing will have a z32 for cats test - it only shows them on z32's after '94 - '94 was when the z32 stopped coming to the uk.... Go figure :D

Now can we get back on topic please? ;)

CheerZ,

Andy
