For the past six years or so I've been trying to restore a 2 seater 260Z. Things have moved along in fits & starts as they do, but I just can't see the light at the end of the tunnel.

A promotion looming at work gives me a company car allowance although I don't need to travel much for the job, and the wife has agreed what a good idea it would be for me to buy a twin turbo 300. (top girl)

I suspect this may have come up before but I'm looking for any advice going that can help me in my quest to drive a Zed again. What should I look out for, what do I want or want to avoid? Do they all come with the toys? (air con, cruise, elec seats etc etc) Should I avoid the imports? I've seen a company online called group 20 in Southampton, is it true that parts are hard to get for imports?

So many questions????

Any help I'd be most grateful...............

Cheers all & A Happy New Year

Matin.

Well happy looking.

You can do a search on buying a 300zx on this forum as it is a frequent question.

Imports don't have any disadvantage, only insurance will be more expensive and some companies won't insure them, but you have no rust problems if it's a recent import.

Go for a Twin Turbo it's faster than the N/A and if you get a n/a you'll later wonder what the extra power is like.

You'll have to decide if you want auto or manual - a big debate here!!!

I'm sure you'll get alot of other advice here and do do a search!!!

Good luck.

Geoff.

only way to go

About a year ago I started to make a web site for Z beginners trying to answer all the stupid questions which we know but people ask, like, what to look for when buying (Not so much a stupid question) to what does it sound like, cost of running, UK/Jap differences and stuff like that. I think I will try to get it going again while I am off for a while.

Stuart

Check out the for sale section on here, any members selling (ie me as of today  ) from here will have a searchable history on their car.

Cheers

Nearly right, but what you must of meant was

red J spec auto TT:p

Can't answer all of your qs but can do some.

What should I look out for, what do I want or want to avoid?

First, look at buyer's guides and other info at

http://www.300zx.org.uk/z32_info.htm

(which really should be the first port of call - it has so many links to good stuff that it is really the forum unofficial FAQs!)

Do they all come with the toys? (air con, cruise, elec seats etc etc)

No - see the above link for guide to different model years

Should I avoid the imports? I've seen a company online called group 20 in Southampton

No need to avoid imports unless the insurance company cuts up rough. A bit of "search" here and on http://www.300zx.org.uk should find you a good insurer who won't have a hissy fit. don't know about group 20.

is it true that parts are hard to get for imports?
No. Most parts are the same as UK but in case not, there's MJP Auto (see traders section) who is Mr F and posts here and the ZClub.net

Also there is little problem in getting parts from US from (eg) ConceptZ Performance and Courtesy Nissan.

Commonest spec in the UK is 2+2 Twin Turbo as this was the official model import. You can have your own argument about manual / auto :D

Other say the shorter SWB 2 seater coupe is a little tauter and sportier.

NA (normally aspirated) were never officially imported but some insurance companies will do a better price even tho import as the performance is non-turbo.

Best advice is what is said above - don't by a shed / bag of bones. IMHO the more you want to modify, the bigger your wallet and shock-resistance needs to be. Mines' a stock 2+2 TT J-spec and it's just the job for me!

Good luck - Gio

They will sort you out on a classic policy if you do 6,000 miles or less....

I'm with them and mine is £257'ish.........no excess as I insured that for £25..... ;)

I'm 30 with full NCB, garaged and ok postcode.
