The 350Z gets what 260-280 bhp depending on spec from 3.5 litres??? Surely it should be making at least 350bhp? ;)

It probably can make 350bhp easy, but there is a law that no mass produced car in Japan can go over the 280PS limit.

Performance is driven by torque at wheels, not power at flywheel!

The S2000 is revvy and therefore it the engine will have a high power figure even with no pull. It has 162ft-lb@6500rpm (slightly less than my daily driver TDI I may add) so no only is it wussy, you don't get it until you'll a long way up a gear. This is compared to 274ft-lb@4800 revs from the Z. Half as much pull again and it arrives sooner. (Not much sooner because the redline is lower in the Z, to be fair.)

So in the S2000 the gearbox does the work, not the engine. In the Z the reverse is pretty much true, and the Z does suffer because it's heavier.

Z produces 287bhp@6200rpm by the way.

The Civic again has only 144ft-lb and you don't get it until 6500 rpm. Given top speed is only 146mph this thing must have a penny farthing in the gearbox!

Conversely the daily driver has 155ft-lb from 1850-4150rpm but it's slow to 100 because you've had to change gear 5 times to get there...

Finally something I missed in my previous rant... they don't have "a shed load of them to shift" - they have a waiting list in months already! I think even Nissan have been caught out by demand.

Torque Schmorque..... Go buy yourself a diesel VW if you want torque. :slap: :slap: :slap:   :p

Mike Feeney's post from the zclub.net forum

"Whichever way you look at it, the quoted quarter mile time for a 350Z is 14.1 secs at 100mph and the 300ZXTT is 14.4 seconds at 100mph, statistics from the same magazine road tests, so we would expect some comparibility.

The TT 4th gear is the same as the 350Z 5th (i.e. 1:1) and 3rd is somewhere towards the top end of the gap between the 350Z 3rd and 4th, so direct comparisons are not possible, but towards the end of the quarter mile, in the region 80-100mph, the 350Z would appear to have a small advantage over the TT. The 350Z will have to make one more gear change in the quarter than the 300, as 3rd runs to 90mph at 6500rpm.

It is also apparent how closely matched the standard versions of the two cars really are, so there will be plenty of scope for driver error to make a significant difference. I suggest all interested parties get down to the first round of the Z Club Drag Race Challenge at Santa Pod in 2004 so that we can test the differences for ourselves.......and the differences in reaction times of the drivers involved.

I thought that law was being relaxed now, as isnt the R35 supposed to be a 400bhp NA V8?

Reading latest Banzi mag and Gready in the states have twin turboed a 350Z and only been able to get 315bhp out of it. I also read that Nissan were going to use this engine as the basiss of the R35 GTR and because the thing keeps blowing up and braking front half shafts they have had to put it back by 3yrs as they pronounced that the new R35 GTR would be a 450bhp supercar.

P.S. if its not a renault engine how come Nissan have lost the nack of building a good motor that doesn't look just like the same motor that was in the Renault spider. Wasn't that 260bhp

supposed. Are there any? Also its massed produced. I think you are allowed so many before its massed produced. Like the Mitsu Evo Extreme. That is 360bhp standard but wasnt classed as mass produced I think.

Paul, I wasnt saying that manuals are better than auto's (even though they are;) ) What I was saying is that manuals launch better than auto's. Once they're both running up the strip, an auto with equal whp should be faster cos of its full throttle shifts.

Yeah, but the R35 is the skyline replacement, so it will be a "mass produced" car, regardless of the no's its made in - its not a limited edition version of another car, its gonna be the base model.

MANUAL TT WIDE ARCH RULES !!!! NUFF SAID !!!

     :D  ;)

read my post about how my replacement parts for my popped computer also went pop and when the replacement for the replacement also popped. You will realise what I have been doing all day and only had 40 mins or so at home before I had to come and sit in work for 3 hours before the football match starts.

When I get home I have to install windows again and I am hoping that everything will be OK.

If all goes well when I get home (When does it ever go well with computers?;)) a link will probably be up for later tonight.

Stuart

errm isnt the point that it won!!?

Dont give me this

"It doesn't matter whether you win by an inch or a mile, winnings winning" Hehehehehe

:( damn missed again.....silly 7.00 starts!

I hope this don't put the price of Z's up - seen one in a local paper, TT Manual, 89K, £3,600 or £3,800 ( ) - but it sounds a bit too cheap to touch.

Still give me a year or two, and bar any more accidents and speeding bits and bobs, a Z shall be mine (hopefully!)

Very good viewing:D

Always new the 300 would win:rolleyes:

Anyway, who said the Cossie would beat the 300ZX:confused:

I've taken a cossie both off the lights and in a rolling start. No probs.

Read Autocar 25th May 1994. (Cossie v Celica GT4)

Cossie = 0-60 in 6 and 0-100 in 17.9 (1/4 in 15.0 at 94mph) and 30-70 thru gears in 6.5.

WAY slower than a 300zx

Richard:D

I have something to say............ It's better to burn out than to fade away..... :tt2:

When we went Santa Pod there was a Escort Cosworth with us and got slower than out Zs. But it did wheels spin as did the Zs.

Did any one notice the number plate of the Z?

** PEN. I am sure I have seen that plate on here somewhere. I think it was on the car under the ride Jools on the old system.

I know the Jools car is sold as the person who owns it now lived near me.

Stuart

The race was great fun, but I don't think you can really compare the cars on this way, even for standing start times, as driver errors are the single biggest factor. We all saw the 300 get a slower start, but it's difficult to judge the quality of the gear changes and throttle control throughout, so how can you tell if any of the runs are typical for the car?

They need to use the same tyres etc too to be fair and my guess is these cars were simply used as supplied, however that was.

They should ahve done multiple runs with the drivers swapping cars too to be fairer, then show a representative run.

SOmehow I doubt that Top Gear, which is renowned for it's balanced, unbiased opinions, bothered to go to that kind of effort to bring us our entertainment! And I think the 5th of a mile crap was probably a calculated part of the equation for some of these head to heads!

(I cheered at the end too though!!)

do you need forged pistons with candy apple? sh1t should have chosen something more suttle, that i just needed a air freshner with.still i guess that has to be next thing that the wife will moan about still getting over the cost of remapping the ecu but what a differance.

i want me video:cry:

Saw a stock 300 racing against 350s, 911s, Mustangs, M3s, Elises at Sebring International Raceway last week on the way to Miami and I must say that the 300 seemed quicker than the 350s ut it was nice to see the old girl win on TV!

OK OK OK ;)

My computer is running now, but when I try to boot from the original discs it throws a fit

I will do my best. ;)
