Hi,

The zed has reputedly a problem with the rear cylinders overheating!

This is alledgedly down to too much of the water channel flashings left in the block, from the original casting!

They don't let coolant flow to the rear cylinders easily and can be removed if you have an engine rebuild!!

Also problems with the plenum design and heat from the turbos can mean the charge air is hotter at the rear cylinders!

So just out of interest chuk down what cylinder failed on your motor?

Ask AndyG next time you speak to him!

The front three cylinders have plenty of flow to them and rears have hardly any!

I know what you mean mate,I have seen it just saying if it was so bad would you get 12 years without a rebuild?

Did you take any pics?

So......whats the answer to this then?

Dunno... buy a Supra?

So, can I vote more than once then? Three of mine busted (2 in one session and then the a forged one on #1 - but I dunno if that counts).

come to think of it mate, I don't think the fuel system can be at fault since the fuel pump and rail can handle up to 600BHP alledgedly!

I think the only answer is when you do an engine rebuild, is to take the core plugs out and remove the casting flashings from around those cylinders!

Head gasket went by the water channel on number 3 for me!

Would this weaken the area though?

  • Author

Roy,

No mate it wouldn't weaken the area, if you saw it you would see what I mean!

It is almost like a thin fold of metal virtually covering no 4 and 6 also restricting no 5's coolant flow!

I think AndyG has some pictures of the work we did on this, but I don't think it would come out well on the photos!

If you want to take a pic of somethign like that, you have to get the light right so you can see it when looking through the camera and then dont use a flash if you can. A flash will over load it with light

Thanks but the engine is back together now:D

sounds like poor quality controll!!

well i must have been a real dumb succer to have put redweld in my coolant system that would, more or less have blocked the flow to the rear cylinders!!!

thats why my no6 piston looked although it melted!!

Well we (me & father) had the idea of removing the thermostat so the water flows all the time, yes it will take longer to heat up but surly it would help with the cooling??

Any ideas

Kirbz

But the engine may never get warm. When my thermostat went, a 2 hour drive and the water still didnt get to operating temperature. That is 2 hours when saftey boost is on, timing is retarded and the choke is on.

Kirbz,

You are doing an engine rebuild, you can remove the old casting flashings then!

All you do is knock out the core plugs and get a coarse round file and get working!

Came across these and thought it would help show what people are talking about.

Before casting flash removed

Jaffa,

Thanks for the pictures mate, the only probem is, that is a vertical pic of no 4 and 5 coolant feed!

If you take the core plug out of the back of the engine and see how they block no 6 cylinder, it is virtually enclosed!

Not even going to pretend I knew that, but came accross some pics that at least showed the affect :)
