the dip stick

:D

I expect he meant "which grade / brand / type"...

Castrol RS is popular on here, I'm a Shell Helix fan, C&S Woods put Valvoline in. I'd put at least a 10/40 meself. Some on here use 10/60 but that seems a bit thick to me for an oil that you'll be changing every 3k miles.

Fully synth is best BUT if you haven't run synthetic in the engine before it can make a real mess of it by redissolving all the minerals / crud from the previous oils - so try and find that out first!

So my answer is Shell Helix Ultra 10/40. Having said that I might try 10/50 next time and see if my sticker lifter sorts itself out.

[edit: originally put 10k miles! :slap: ]

David

I used to use castrol 10/60 for a while and then changed to mobil

full/syth 15/50.

seems to be just as good.

jim.

a stickey lifter is another name for a theiving twat is'nt it?

usually you can hear one lifter that taps away like i little hammer on tick over, sometimes curred running some engine flush through, then change the oil.

cheers

jim.

Hi

How much do you pay for full synth oil?

Only ask because I paid £27 for 5 litres at partco.

Two other shops wanted £33.

What do you mean mate?

Oil change is every 3k miles and 10/60 is good for the really hot ,hard working Z engine i think:) especially in summer.

Ive changed to RS 0/40 now winter's here tho.

What is the oil change frequency? My handbook says 6k. I am going to get a service next week at about 5.5k. Have I wasted the engine by not having it done at 3?

arthur, I pay 32 pound for full syth 15/50 mobil 1.

It will be ok Rich, stay at around 3 , some do it less,:)

Tony

Symptoms are tickticktickticktick - more pronounced / definite / regular than the tapetty rattle that ageing engines almost always have. With the bonnet open you can hear exactly where it's coming from even though half the engine is in the way - that's what I mean by "definite."

In my case it started -after- an oil change!

It goes when I boot it - not just because of the extra other noises, because it'll still be gone when I slow down again - but will come back when sitting in traffic. I guess that's because of the better oil pressure under load.

What a twonk. I typed 10k because that's the service interval on my daily driver! I change it every 5 even in that because I drive it hard though.

Sorry to anyone who was thinking of putting off their service after seeing my post. :slap:

GOod point about summer/winter, now it's got 15/40 in it's -really- not happy until up to temperature, cos the 15 is a bit thick for this time of year.

I currently use Shell Helix Ultra fully synth. BTW, it is 5W40, not 10W40 as mentioned earlier.

5W much better for winter as it's not as thick when cold, so better for seals etc.

Richard;)

I have something to say............ It's better to burn out than to fade away..... :tt2:
