ECU Mod

Is there any quick and easy way to tell if the ECU has been modded? Im thinking of getting this done as it would then take car to a stage 3. Thing is I think it may be done already. Im running 9 or 11psi (I think its 11psi) and its quick as hell, but would like to know if its been chipped or chipping owuld give me even more.

Yep, take it out, take off the cover and look at the chip. If it's fitted into a push-fit connector it's been modded. If it's soldered in place it's stock.

Right, and where do I find the ECU? :)

Behind the firewall on the passenger side.

Pull up the carpet and you will see a piece of wood (strange!, I thought so) I beleive there are about 6 screws to undo and you will see the ECU. to the right. Held in by a few screws.

Not sure how to take it apart, never been that daring :)

Sorry bad explination there.

It's behind the firewall on the passenger side.

Sit in the passenger seat and pull up the carpet and you will see a piece of wood, this is the firewall (strange!, I thought so) I beleive there are about 6 screws to undo and you should now be able to remove the piece of wood. You will now see the ECU to the right and this will be held in by a few screws.

It should take you about 20 Minutes.

Make sure you disconnect the battery before you do anything with the ECU.

Once you have got the wood away you will see the ECU. It is held in place by a metal bracket by 3 bolts 10mm if I remember correctly. Undo these bolts and you should be able to move the ECU slightly. You can then disconnect the wiring harness from the box (think this is a 10mm bolt) Be careful when disconnecting the wiring harness, take your time. Once you have undone the wiring harness bolt you can disconnect it from the ECU and you can remove it from the car.

Dead easy job ....

Then it is just a question of looking within the ECU housing to see if it has been socketed or not.

Not all modded ECU's are socketed, some tuners eg JUN, MINES solder a new chip in then cover it in epoxy.

To be sure, lift the daughter board and then see if the chip has a blue and white sticker with a number on it - if it does it's stock.
