Ive got a problem with my jap n/a, after driving a few miles with the foot down and then slowing down for traffic i suddenly noticed the oil pressure start to drop off slowly from around 40psi all the way down to ZERO, now on start up from cold its 60-70psi(normal) and once warmed up it now sits at 30psi after watching it for a few minutes it dropped 10psi and came straight back up to 30psi, seems to have a mind of its own, after leaving it running for 20 mins more everything is fine.

 

By my reckoning its either the pump or the big end bearings, the oil level is fine, any ideas as to the costs of replacing with new.

The stock oil pressure sensor is considered very unreliable, after 10 years of hot oil tends to wear them down a little. If there are no other signs of problems i wouldnt worry about it, if you are worried get your hands on an aftermarket gauge or a new sensor from nissan. I don't think they're too expensive.

They are!!! The cost is about £80+ from Nissan, the price of a set of aftermarket guages with senders!!!

Is fitting an aftermarket oil guage a difficult job? Do-able at home or get someone else to do it? How much roughly would it be to get someone to fit it?

Sureley the stock replacement is just an oil pressure switch, retail of about £10 at most motor factors??:confused:

my jap na has done that for the past 4 years. The oil pump is engine speed sensitive - so basically the lower the revs, the lower the pressure - or the less the pump has to work. Therefore treat the guage as a visual device that shows how hard the pump is working.

 

First time it dropped to zero I stopped the car and checked everything. 2nd time I let it cool down. 3rd time I ignored it and looked into why co the knowledge on this forum - and haven't bothered since.

 

Travelling all day on a french motorway with cruise set at max permissible limit saw the guage read just under half way - so the pump and guage are actually working properly.

 

We (as Europeans) are not used to this type of fluctuation as most cars don't operate speed sensitive oil pumps (I'm out of my depth here).

 

Only thing to worry about is your guage - if it's Jap, it shouldn't read in psi...

Had a look at work today, if it is the oil pressure switch which does this its an XOPS48 made by Commercial Ignition (part of QH) and retails at £4.99 !!!

 

Dont ask me how to fit the fooker though!!!

Most oil senders are the same, but the big problem is probably trying to wire it up to the Nissan harness.

Aftermarket are easy to do. If you get an electrical one, swap the old sender for the one you get with the dial, then get a long peice of wire, attatch one end of the wire to the oil sender, and then the other side to the back of the dail to the "S" or "Signal" terminal.

 

Then all you need is a 12V feed (I got one from the cig lighter) and an earth (There are hundreds in the car) and the dial is working.

 

The light bulb you splice into any light wire.

Thanks guys, I'm pretty sure its the sender as I went for a long drive around 70 miles and mid way it dropped to zero then 10 minutes later it was back to normal. I've bought an aftermarket one with intentions of fitting it and a volt meter into an A pillar pod.

I just had my sender unit replaced. It's quite a big switch-type thing but dead easy to do. There's a detailed procedure from one of the links pages.

Bloody expensive though, at £80+vat from Nissan. Still, mine was paid for by warranty co:D

 

Symptoms were low/zero pressure at hot idle (sometimes) even though it showed normal 30-60psi whilst driving. Now cured by new switch.

 

Bl00dy hell, B19rks if the one your work sells is the same it shows how much Nippon are ripping us off:eek:

Is there anyway of telling if what b19rks can get hold of is the same? I wouldn't mind changing mine but im not gunna spend £80 on it.

The zed sender is not a simple low pressure switch like the kind that operates the yellow light on some cars. It is a transducer with moving parts to correlate pressure to a variable resistance.

 

With time it wears out the bit it is usually operating in. Result is it shows correct when cold and pressure very high but at the middle and low end of the scale its worn out and shows mainly low. Then sometimes it finds a good bit of carbon track and reads great for a couple of days.

Can someone send me a busted one - I'd like to see whether they can be repaired.

OK, heres a pic of the one in the book at work, can anyone conform if this is the same as the nissan one or not?

 

As it retails at £4.99 its got to be worth checking!!!
