I don't know if it's an old one or not, but my company just put out a warning about a phone scam. Here it is.....
This communication is to make you aware of a telephone scam, aimed at householders (and businesses), that is in operation:
We have been made aware of a possible telephone scam. Please read the following information carefully.
Under no circumstances should you press "9". When the phone rings the following recorded message is played: 'Congratulations - we are calling to advise you that you have won an all expenses paid trip to ......... Please press 9 now to hear further details.' If 9 is pressed, this connects you to a premium line that bills in the region of £20 per minute. Once you dial 9 and connect, even if you disconnect immediately, the call will stay connected for a minimum of 5 minutes (£100). If you stay connected, after 11 minutes a recorded message asks you to key in your postcode and house number. After a further 2 minutes callers receive the following message: 'Sorry, you are not one of the lucky winners.' After this the line disconnects. Impacts - the cost of these phone calls can run to approx. £260 and it is not clear what the postcode and house number information is being used for.
Indications are that the calls are originating from outside the UK and BT are relatively powerless to stop the calls. The only safe solution is to hang up before it prompts you to press 9.
...... there ya go. You have been warned.:)
