About to do a winter service, what oil would people recommend for the months November - May on an engine that has done 113,000 mile, 50,000 on a new short engine. 10w40?

And I did have a quick search :)

Hi, I need oil chage any brand recommened ?

Think last change was Magnatec.

Went to Partco lunch time for a micra fan belt,

ask them price of 5ltr full synthetic oil - £27, Halfords - £29.99

ZX oil filter Partco - £3.05!

Well there you go - I just spoke to Castrol a cople of days ago to clear up a confusion. The techy bloke said:

1) The API grade of oil denotes its overall quality. Nissan only specify a SG grade for our Z and modern oils are up to SL (S means petrol and the next letter - started at A and increases by one letter every time there's a spec upgrade - we are now at SL which is several grades up from SG).

2) Magnetec is a semi-synthetic and from the tech data he had, 10w40 is good for Zeds.

3) You will get better protection by using a full synthetic. Castrol's is RS and he would use 0W40 for Zeds.

4) The Japanese car manufacturers tend to be conservative and cautious on their oil specs so if you use what they say, you should be fine.

5) Also J manufacturers will design their engines according to the quality of lubricants already on the market. Some Euro manufacturers will design an engine which needs a very high performance oil and then go to the lubricant manufacturers to get them to make a better oil.

I stick with Morris 10w50 fully synth all year round. About £25 for 5l from my local MotorQuip.

Will a 0w40 find all the worn bits on an older engine resutling in oil leaks? Saw some 15w60 that I've been thinking about using!

It has been known for the 0 weight oil to be a bit thin sometimes. It can leak a bit more than usual and may be a bit noisier as well. Some cars are fine with it - You can but try and see.

10w40 for me then, I have a bit of a tappy noise on the 0w oils so thats a no go this time.

its going into garage next week for service and stamp then its out with the wire wool and toothbrush to give it a well deserved under bonnet throtle body and connector going over :)

I've been using Shell Helix (Ultra, I think) fully synthetic 5W40.

It gave good pressure/no noise when hot throughout the hot summer and is light enough for winter use.

0W40 would be better if winter temps get very low but my mechanic advised against Mobil 1 coz it's too thin and drains away from bearings too quickly.

I have something to say............ It's better to burn out than to fade away..... :tt2:

how about mobil 1 i got a gallon of that is that any good?

Hi Steve

Re mobil-1, see my above post:D

Seriously, though. I always used it in my Supra and it was ok, although it had a habit of getting through oil on occasions. No leaks and no turbo smoke, so a bit of a mystery. On my mechanic's instructions I switched to a thicker oil (mobil-1 15W50 Motorsport) and the oil consumption dropped:confused: Fuel consumption went up coz it was too thick

That's when I tried 5W40 (Shell Helix Synthetic is £29 for 4 ltrs), and I've stuck with it in my Zed so far.......

Anyway, try Mobil-1 0W40, if it's sh1te you can always change it again;)
