Hello,

Hope this isn't a stoopid question, but I've got a hole in my exhaust about the size of a 1p. Its on the last bend just before the backbox. Is this an MOT failure (test on monday). Can I just patch it for now until i can afford to buy a nice new one?

Also, I've got a funny noise coming from the top/front of the engine. The only way I can describe it is a kind of rubbing noise, like when bearings are wearing??. Its just audible at idle, gets a little noisier at about 3000rpm, then disappears after about 3500rpm.. Any ideas wot it could be.. nothing too expensive I'm praying :(

Thanks in advance for any answers..:D

If u patch it then it shouldnt fail.

Could it be one of the belts of the accessories at the front of the engine.

You're definitely ok if you can plug the hole with paste sealant, but I think you'd fail if you use the bandage.

I got the same exhaust/mot problem, mine i think has split along the weld between tail can and pipe. Hoping to be able to use some paste to seal it up then fingers X'ed. Mot tomorrow:D

from the MOT testing manual (section 7.1, subsection 2a ;) ):

A durable repair to an exhaust system which effectively prevents leaks is acceptable providing the system is structurally sound.

my brother tells me theres some fancy exhaust 'tape' thats super strong. will keep an eye out for it!

Thanks for the replies, I think I'll have a go at repairing it tomorrow.

Also, when checking the P/S fluid, how do you know what level to fill it to? I cant seem to find a MAX/MIN mark on it??

If it's round particular revs then it may just be something rattling / resonating... tighten everything up round there? I found a loose bolt on a coilpack!

Or the A/C compressor is around there somewhere I think.

Or it might be the viscous fan (the humungous one in front of the radiator) - is this spinning when you get the noise? (Mind fingers when poking about!)

Malibu,

P/S top-up: take the P/S cap off and have a look at the little black stalk with the white "floating bung" on it - the stalk has the min/max markings on it.
