I tried starting my Zed last night (after having it sitting on the drive for about three weeks). It wouldn't start, and every time I turned the key, I heard a humming/spinning noise. When I explained this t someone I know, they said it could be that the starter motor isn't engaging....I just thought it was a flat battery, because the alarm was acting strangely into the bargain.

Anyway, my question is: Can I just try starting it from another car with jump leads, in the usual way.....there's nothing wrong with doing this on a Zed is there?

Failing that, its a bloody RAC pick up truck....again!

Does sound like a stuck starter motor - giving it a bang with a hammer sometimes sorts it.

If it is the starter then jump leads won't help.

You would be better to bump start it if its a manual and hope a drive loosens it up.

If it's an auto it's an RAC job...

Thanks ChrisC.......afraid its an auto though. If I'm standing in front of it with the bonnet open, where is the starter motor? Sorry if thats a dumb question, but I'm not too mechanically minded.

Cheers

its on the left at the back and bottom of the engine, where the gearbox joins the back of the engine

Try jump lead start; after standing for 3 weeks the battery

is unlikely to have enough power to engage the starter

pinion, let alone turn it.

being a pre engaged starter, I think, the solenoid kicks the gear into the ring gear, the teeth on the converter, beofre spinning the starter motor, unless you donjt have much battery power, and then sometimes it just spins the motor with out engaging the teeth. Does that make any sense?

It sounds like it does to me! I'll give that a go I think.
