When I first start the car up the orange 'Power' light flashes about 10 times really fast, as though it's doing a gearbox diagnostic. Why should it do that? whats it trying to tell me? Also my speedo keeds dying:(

Have a look through that little lot.

It looks like your speed sensor on the gearbox has died.

Does your HICAS light sometimes come on and the power steering go light at speed and heavy when parking?

Quite an easy job to change but I think the part is about £60 ish?

Mine got replaced under warranty so I'm not certain on that.

sounds exactly right chris, the hicas light comes on now and then and the steering went heavy a few times. Ive got a fluid leak from the power steering piping so i presumed it was that, I topped up the fluid and the hicas light stays out. Does the speed sensor stop the speedo working? And yes it is a jap spec...

"DRIVE" always works for me!

cheeky git!:p I mean I hear of some people driving in the 1/2 gears, how do they work?

How do they work???? Come on, you are taking the mickey now?

Put the stick thing in 1 and it will be in 1st gear.........put it in 2 and that means it will be in 2nd gear! :p

i havent tried em!! I wasnt sure if they went through the range but maybe used different torques etc whats the difference between using 1/2 and just drive?

Well DRIVE will go up and down through the gears. Sticking it in 1 or 2 means it will remain in that gear (and won't shift).

Is this your first ever car? :D

A speed convertor can cause some of this but on mine it was the sensor.

The sensor provides the speed signal to everything on the car that needs it - ECU, HICAS, Power Steering, Speedo etc so if the signal goes intermitant the car does strange things.

The flashing light you are getting is the auto box diags failing the speed sensor.

You could remove the top of the instrument cluster and disconnect the convertor if it has one fitted in 5 minutes.

There's just 2 screws in the lid above the perspex over the dials.

Drive it for a bit with no convertor and see if the problem goes away.

There's another thread going on about this at the mo:

Oh no it doesn't! LOL

1 - Stays in First

2 - First or Second

D - First, Second or Third

Jap Spec

Hold Button - Stay in highest gear selected (for snow etc)

Power Button - Changes up later (for fast driving)

cheers chris. Bloody car! who needs a speedo anyway!?

I knew someone would say in 2 it can go into 1st aswell! I was keeping it simple! Have it in 2 on pull away and it will drop to 1st but will go no further than 2nd.

Night wolf,,,when you plant your foot on the gas pedal hard the auto will know and goes into power mode automatically,, you`ll see the power light come on ,on your dash,,,,so don`t worry the car will ad just for you most of the time ,but for those other times press the button , remove overdrive to off ,,another light on the dash will appear and away you go ,,,oh HOLD:-actually removes 1st gear from the sequence when your in "D" for slippery conditions etc,,Happy driving mate!!!

I've noticed 1st and 2nd in a manwell seems to have an "oversteer" function rather than overdrive! :D

My autobox occasionally goes into 4th gear in "Drive" ;):D

ok Autobox stuff aside, my speedo has died alltogether now! where abouts is this speed sensor so i can have a fiddle?

This is it here:

On the underside of the gearbox.

As you can see its v near the exhaust so the wiring is susceptible to heat damage.

Pete

up is front in that pic?

I think so...anyone confirm?

I had a tinker with mine and decided there was nothing (obviously) wrong with it, its pretty easy to find even if up isnt front ;)
