My temperature guage works normal for most of the time. As soon as i got up to a bit of speed it starts to read colder and colder, give it some welly and the guage just drops to the bottom and rests on the stop. Come off the motorway and the guage starts to go back up to just below normal (where normal is slightly below horizantal. The car appears to be running at normal temperature. Any body know what's going on?

Check and clean the contacts on the coolant temprature sensor, The yellow thing on top of the Radiator see if it makes a difference. Failing that replacing it might be needed, aslong as the car is running at the correct temp !!!!!

Try doing a ECU diag also.

The temperature gauge is controlled purely from it's own sensor.

The coolant sensor (for the ECU) and the gauge sensor are right next to each other.

The gauge sensor is a simple spade connector, and is on the right.

The ECU is a square block connector on the left.

Here is an earlier thread, which contains a picture of the sensors.

The ECU connector controls everything else including the electric fan.

Grant,

I had exactly the same problem. The temp reading would dip when I accelerated. The connector on the sensor is moving. There is a lot of air forced through that area. What I did was pull the connector off an turn it around (not the sensor, just the connector, oh and its the right hand one!). That gave it a stronger connection. You may also need to manipulate the connector to make it grip tighter. Use the link provided by Craig for a picture.

Thanks guys. You must be right because the problem is geting worse. The guage is all over the place now, I know the engine temp is OK. I'll check the connecter on Friday and let you know.

Thanks for the old thread as well Craig,

Grant.
