Just trying to decide which bumper I want to upgrade to and have been wondering about the aerodynamics , for you technical bods out there at what sort of speed will the front bumper come in to play ??

I know the standard bumper is aerodynamic but lets bugger all air in to the rad etc , where as some of the others must be like driving with a brick in front of your car and therfore not aerodynamic at all.

Thought's as always appreciated

you're not wrong on that one Chris :D Love that front, every car ive seen it on is gorgeous, mmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmm.

Been thinking of a new front bumper myself. Have to say that Greddy bumper is the best ive seen! Where dya get it?

Have you got any pictures of the difference between what happens when you knock the front of the stillen and then the greddy at 5mph each ? ;)

no, but i can tell you, the stillen one bends a bit, probably cracking all the paintwork on it, the greddy one is cracked in a big way, wrecked totally. But theres an easy solution to that ;) DONT HIT THINGS! :D

the stillen one bends a bit, probably cracking all the paintwork on it

Yes the Stillen will bend, no the paint won't crack if its been done properly :D

Well the original Greddy is about £700 from the U.S or Z Centre do a copy (which I have) called the Scarab and it's only about £280 I think.

Stillen is made of nice flexy stuff instead of fibreglass but at about £650 you can replace your Scarab if you ever do destroy it (unlikely). Also fibreglass is easy to repair but I'm not sure what you'd do if you did damage a Stillen...

Ok here is the answer,If you wrecked your stillen you would have to do it at a very high speed because it is so strong!

If you were doing the same speed with a fiberglass front there would be NOTHING left to repair!

So the moto is you only get serious quality if you are prepaired to pay the price:p

Aerodynamics come into play at very low speeds. When I fly my paraglider with an engine, it has enough lift to take me and the engine off the ground at 25 mph.

However, as you've noticed, there a number of factors to take into account :

1) How much drag the spoiler creates

2) How the air is directed over the top and bottom surfaces (the greater the air pressure difference between the top & bottom, the greater the downforce)

3) How much cooling is provided

4) Looks

An aerodynamicist can do all sorts of calculations for you but, ultimately, the front spoiler only starts the changes to the airflow. The rest of the bodywork, under-surfaces, openings (windows & sunroof) have a huge impact and can totally negate any benefit from the front spoiler.

So my advice, as someone who understands a little bit about aerodynamics, is go for the one you like the look of.

Cheers

Like I said, apart from the logical bit, Wings West :D:D:D

Mike

Let me ge this right ,,,,,the std car goes like stink, looks gorgeous,,,and with afew mods,,you can have another 20% more power ,,and you are worried about aerodynamics??? The body of the z32 was tested in a wind tunnel way back in 88-89 and found to be most efficient,,ah so!:slap:

Man unless you are going to mod the engine big time like some of these guyz,,,, Much respect:dance: ,,,who need to get more air in for cooling and performance,,,i would not worry ,,,spend your money on tuning parts ,,,,cause you never know ,,you could have a rear ender and then you`ll need to replace it,,,,then get the greddy front end,it keeps with lines of the car.

its just a thought,,or was it a memory,,,christ thats deep.

Ok So let me put it another way.....

two identical cars one with the scarab front bumper and one with the standard front bumper have a race , lets say 0-120 which one do you think would get to 120mph first ??? I put money on it, it will be the standard bumper one

God I am gonna sound like Nelson if I am not careful

We seem to spend a fortune on tunning over here but never really think obout the effects of aerodynamics , which could drastically improve performance.

Seen one of the new wings west bumpers in urathene at PPS and it looks very nice, its not that different from the ultimate looking bumper (greddy) :D so its worth a thinking about. You have to go with what looks best to you, It would be mad to buy a bumper that isnt your favorite just because of what it is made of on the off chance your going to damage it. I would rather repair scrapes on my greddy every 6 months rather than have to drive it round with any other bumper on.

You tell em Chris ;)
