Was just sent this by a friend of mine in the Met.

 

'Those new electronic signs on the M4 were switched on this Tuesday.

 

The bad news is that they are rigged with the SPECS speed cameras. SPECS is a computer-camera based system. As you go past the sign a digital camera reads your number plate. When you go past the next sign your number plate is read again. The computer 'knows' how far apart the signs are so it can work out your average speed between the two, or three or four.

 

The system is fully automatic and will issue a ticket without any form of human intervention. It does this for every single vehicle that passes.

 

You will not know you've been caught as the cameras don't flash. They work 24/7, 365 days a year, and theoretically, there's absolutely no limit on the number of tickets that the system can issue. The whole section of the M4 between Theale (J12) and Membury Services (between 14 and 15) is wired, both ways. The system is set to trigger a ticket at 78 mph. Radar detectors will be of no use as SPECS is entirely passive, there is no radar or laser beam to detect. Be warned and spread the news.'

They do flash !!!! I went through them last Thursday going to Reading at about 7am and they were going loopy so slowed up to 70 mph whilst everybody else was doing 80-90

 

Not sure if I got caught before I realised , cheeky gits they have been off for months and with no warning they turn them on :mad:

Actually the ones where the signs which tell you to slow down do most of the time make people slow down.

 

Its really a shock to some people that they have been detected going to fast and they have been warned that they are speeding and not fined straight away.

You sure it's not just the low sun reflecting on the camera's? SPEC's don't flash anyway.

 

Tell you what, drive through at 150ish and see if you get banned, can't think of a more positive test than that :D:D:D

Only if it's a GPS system and the database is upto date, specs is a passive system.

I may sound too trusting of the boys in blue, but I would be inclined to believe their site, that there are NO specs in those signs.

 

Firstly, specs cameras are usually those triple things and seem too big to be concealed in a roadsign. Secondly they are usually positioned above the carriageway for maximum and accurate detection. Thirdly they are currently only on m'ways and trunk roads etc where the speed limit is somewhere below 70mph.

 

So far there have been no plans to place detection equipment on motorways where there is no lower limit than 70.

 

I won't test that theory just yet, though. I'll wait to see if the rest of you start to get tickets:D :D :D
