i have heard mixed things about them.. is it good or bad to have a t timer on a 300zx?

Featured Replies

How can they be good or bad? They leave your engine running to cool down the turbos.

Or you could be not so much of a lazy arse and sit in your car for a min or 2 after you stop ;)

I have a Autowatch cat 1 alarm and the new Greddy timer,no probs when fitting, plug n play if you use the harness adapter,10 min job,but the only PITA was wiring up the handbrake safety overide connection(i hate taking the interior trim apart:( i hadno probs with alarm after:)

Nice car!!,,,,Now then ,Mr prelude , do you actually know what a turbo timer does and what its for , cause that would help you decide for your self whether or not its a good idea to have one?

One for TonyC

Mate, I have just got the new turbo timer from GetGreddy and have the same alarm system as you and a 90 (G)TT.The supplied harness has an extra white wire -not in the plug-,do I just ignore the extra wiring and just plug in or is there something else that requires doing? Also how did you connect up the speed sensor wire (the purple one?)I have spoken to Chris at GetGreddy and he is on the case, but I thought as you have fitted yours, you might be able to make my install a bit easier!!!!!!!

Quote from MR markstevens

"You need to know what it does to know how to use it. It lkeeps the car running after youhave switched off the ignition, why? Because after a fast/long run the turbos get hot and can stay spinning after you have switched it of.

Using a timer alows the engine to keep pumping oil to the turbos, if you dont, apart from a lack of lube the oil can cook in the oil ways and block them sooner or later, and the timer allows the turbos to slow down.

So work it out for your self from here. Ie how hot/fast/long have you been driving. A good idea is to drive the last few miles slowly anyway."

Turbo timers ......

better than turning the engine off staright away as soon as you park up.

Not as good as running the car without going into boost for the last few minutes of your journey.

Well yesterday I had no idea what one was (more use of this board). I've always been tol' to run the last four or five minutes off boost. Unless it's a company car or a hire car.

Most of the guys on the GTROC have one fitted - it's almost a standard fitting nowadays. Absolutely right there's nothing like running the car off boost for the last few miles - but what fun would that be?:D :D Also, regardless of how low boost you run you still need a bit of time for the car just to run on tickover (slow) to give the turbos a colling down period.

Most timers can be set to have a pre-set time or a variable time depending on how much you are thrashing the engine. Whether it works with your alarm depends on the alarm. If it doesn't, just get out, lock the car, order a pint and come back to set the alarm in a minute or two.

The problem is generally with the immobiliser

"Make sure that the immobiliser uses the +15 signal (ignition live) and not the accessory or key-in signal. The immobiliser will not cut in until the turbo timer has stopped the engine"

you will need to set your alarm manually afterwoods though as if you do it usually automatically whacks the immobilser on,

"Ignition live on a 300ZX is the black/red wire at ignition switch "

I reckon ive got the oldest turbo timer in the world (see pic) if it was any older you'd hear it tick!!!

Good thing about it though is i'd wager its been there since new, so my tubs should of been well looked after!!!:D
