How many possible explanations are there for white smoking exhausts?

 

It only seems to be a problem when the car is idling, but then again, who looks backwards when you're driving? :D

 

On idle the fumes smell very petrol rich and I suspected that my JWT chip is overfuelling the car at idle revs. Would this explain it completely, and if so, how do I fix it? I don't want to go back to a standard spec chip, so would a boost/fuel controller sort it?

 

Is there any way of checking that this is the cause before I spend money?

 

Other options you might consider include....

disconnection of the AIVs from the exhaust?

blown turbos (or seals)?

family of native americans taken up residency in my backbox?

 

all helpful suggestions gratefully received.

white smoke is usually water, either condensation which is unavoidable, or coolant, ie head gaskets

 

other possibility, although rare, is brake fluid if the seals in the master cyl have gone

The only reason I ask is mine started to smoke real bad when I first changed the chip to JWT (Lots of smoke) but I found that I hadn't tightened the ECU connector enough. After tightening it still smoked a tiny bit but after a long run and a few miles nothing at all ...

 

All back to normal ...

Quick thread hijack here;

 

After having SE chip put on mine the ehaust tails seem to get cacked up qicker than they used to, and my mpg has dropped from over 20 to about 16or 17 i guess this is normal as to make it faster it must use more fuel, thus less mrg and more emmisions, just thought id check tho.

I will go and check how tight the ecu is fitted - thanks for the suggestion. But then again - I did get an ecu diagnostic done and that came up clear of faults...weird:confused:

I don't think this is the problem, but are there any other symptoms of the head gasket going? - part from the white smoke that is?

Blown HG - bubbles in the coolant, white sludge on dipstick/oil filler cap. Either or both of these could potentially occur with a blown HG. White smoke in your exhaust at idle could also mean turbo rear seals - the reason it is white is the oil only gets heated, NOT burnt. Heated oil gives off white smoke, if the oil has been through the combustion chambers, it will give blue smoke. Probably worth trying the PCV valves before anything else as these are known to cause problems like smoking on idle when they are clogged. You need the 2 valves, with their relevant hoses, and the two front pipes which go from the rocker covers to the turbo intake pipes....

Andy, this is VERY interesting, since the problem only became really noticeable after I had the rocker cover gaskets replaced - could be a coincidence, or did they miss a hose off on the re-build?

 

Can you give me any more clues, and is there any chance I could see this connection without getting under the car?
