Is there an ECU diagnostic code for det sensor failure? cos all I'm getting is code 55

Code34....see my response to your other post

Steve

Mine gives a code 55 until I've been driving it for a while. Sometimes it goes into safety boost almost immediately and sometimes it can be fine for quite a few minutes. Once it's gone into safety boost, it gives a code 34.

So, a code 34 won't necessarily show up straight away.

mine was doing this just after i had it. driving fine cold, but once warmed, if driven on high throttle just as boost comes on, it would det slightly and go to safety boost. Put optimax in it (think it had been on cheap stuff b4 i had it) and cured it immediately.

If your car is doing this, are the wires to the det sensor earthing out? is it detting? is the timing retarded enough for your application? A code 34, as i understand it means its detting?

Code 34 does not necessarily mean the engine is experiencing detonation. Code 34 indicates a fault with the detonation sensor circuit which could be one of many things. I.e., det sensor is knackered, wiring harness from det sensor to connector in the engine bay knackered, connectors are knackered, wiring harness from connector in the engine bay to ECU knackered.

As far as I'm aware, if the det sensor picks up detonation it will signal the ECU to go into safety boost mode (i.e., 7psi boost only) but will not report a Code 34 error. Every time the ignition is turned off the detonation circuit resets itself and starts with a "clean slate" so to speak. If you look at the ECU fault code results using a ConZult it will tell you how many starts ago a particular circuit failed.

Oops, I'm rambling ....

No, a code 34 means the detonation sensor or harness is faulty. I don't think you get a code 34 if it goes into safety boost because of detting.

if it's intermitent, try cleaning the connector - worked for me.

Vijay

Ive just been through all this det sensor stuff code 34 etc...

and mine turned out to be my sparks plugs where incorrectly gapped, I bought some new uk ones NGK6B 11C for my TT but all plugs gaps where far to narrow, gapped them all to 0.044 and wow everything great upto now, (only did it 3 days ago)

JIM.

Jim,

Code 34 means the det sensor circuit has failed, not that your car is detting. I don't see how changing/gapping the plugs would repair your circuit. Sounds more like it's an intermitent problem.

Vijay

Your very right vijay, it has returned..............

JIM.

Hello Jim,

Did you try cleaning the connector?

Vijay

Hi vijay, yes I have cleaned the conector, well it didnt really need cleaning, im going to try some optimax in it at weekend for the run down to santa pod! if that doesnt work it looks like im going to have to make my way down to the det sensor?

anything else you suggest vijay

thanks for being very helpful mate.

JIM.

Hi Jim,

This is what I would do personally.

1. Measure the resistance of the det sensor circuit to check if it's definetly the sensor that's at fault.

2. To double check it is the sensor, you can use a mega ohm resistor to see if the code 34 stops. I would not personally leave the resisitor in place but adrress the problem if your sensor is 100% at fault.

Here's details of how to do the above - http://www.zhome.com/ZCMnL/PICS/detonationSensor/detonationSensor.html

How do oyu do a ECU diag on a manual?

Do you reset ECU by unplugging, turn that pot dial on the isde and plug ECU back on

Where would it tell me a cde 34?

1 - Turn ignition on but do not start engine.

2 - Turn pot fuly clockwise, wait 2 seconds minimum then

turn pot fully anti-clockwise.

3 - Read flashes; the long flash gives the first digit the short flash,

the second digit.

To exit diag mode, repeat step 2.

Some suggest unbolting the unit to see the pot and LED directly

but I use a mirror.

You can find the codes at http://www.ttzd.com/tech/diagnostic/diagnostic.html
