When sitting in the car with just the ignition on (engine off) there was a strange muffled DOOOOONG noise from behind the dash, it does this about every ten seconds, am i the only one with this noise, or is it something we share

Featured Replies

Mine doesn't do that, loads of other things wrong with it though if it makes you feel better!!!

LOL - is it almost like a 'boing' noise?? If so, mine has always done that - not exactly sure what it is - seems to come from the aircon system

ย

Would be interested to learn what it is though...

ย

Cheers!

Are your cars Jap imports ?

ย

I may be the jap chimer that's lost it's earth or something. Or it could just be the lights left on alarm that's playing up.

NOPE, mine is a UK car

UK cars only chime when the lights are on and a door is open. Jap imports chime all the time, when you reverse, when you reach close to the limit, when the Mr. K. is taking a crap etc. and I think the random when the hell it fells like too.

Stuart

LOL - mine's a jap ex auto.

ย

It's not a chime, it's literally a 'boing' - sounds like something out of a cartoon. I only notice it because I'm so aware of every little noise - it ain't loud. Dunno if this is the same noise as Keith has though...

ย

Cheers!

Sounds to me like it's exactly the same noise, it's a very similar noise to the headlight warning, but alot quieter, only a single bong, and is more in the centre of the dash:confused:

Keith,

ย

It's the aftermarket 'ignition hampster' I had installed.

ย

The Doooooiiiing is the alarm going off waking up said hampster to turn over the engine.

ย

Aftermarket hampsters are not cheap and don't last all that long, although you have about a year left on yours (roughly) don't over use the hampster as it gets tired quickly, hence that's why sometimes the engine just will not fire (just a tired hampster)

ย

It's better to have the hampster at this time of year as it's already warm and ready to turn the engine over because of it's thick coat, you can buy different coat thickness hampsters but I went for the top spec ignition hampster as I know how important it is for the Z engine to start up correctly without any fuss or mess.

ย

Some of the cheaper hampsters can be used but don't last as long and you end up buying 3 or 4 over two years when the top spec ignition hamster will last you those 2 years before needing to be changed and some have been known to last longer than that, although this is very rare.

ย

Please remember that these ignition hampsters are very much different to the specially bred 'Turbo Hampsters' which help turbo spooling and come with their own special kevlar flame resistant suits which also prevent the Turbo Hampsters being drawn into the turbo unit itself, thus cutting costs on replacement turbo hampsters (I'm sure the Turbo Hampsters have been covered on other forums before)

ย

Anyway, back onto the ignition hampsters, if it's still firing the engine then you have nothing to worry about but it if the booooooiing is happening and the engine doesn't fire it means your ignition hampster is sadly in need of a change (not under warranty for some reason!) you can buy the same spec ignition hampster or you can go for the latest and best ignition hampster on the market, this is the Ignition Hampster+ with addition features as it comes with a digital start beep instead of the boooooing (the beep is more effective than the booooooing) and a thicker coat (for those winter starts) which can be removed by the ignition hampster during the summer months so it provides good all year round starting ability.

ย

The reliability of the Ignition Hampster+ is yet to be verified but it is believed to be 2 and a half years, so therefor giving better value for money.

ย

Oh and it comes with a free 'Ignition Hampster+' sticker for the side of your Z too.

ย
