Just spent 3 hours with the aircon guy trying to find a suspected leak and now when he's charged it plus dye to find the leak he's afraid that the pressure is running away as the electric fan didnt come on.

Got to 250psi. Said I can use it for now as long as 1'm moving at speed but not in town until we sort out the electric fan switching.

Gona cost at least £100 before we find anything wrong. The man says R12 illegal since Jan but some guys have some left. Not using to find my small leak for obs reasons.

Keep you informed

mines a uk 92 auto.

Matt,

To make sure your compressor clutch is working do:

Start Car, open up bonnet and watch aircon compressor, outside pulley should be spinning all the time, get friend or relative or blue peter presenter to engage air con in car, watch to see if center pulley starts to spin.

If it does they yahay not a clutch prob.

Also, the aircon takes a min or so (well mine does) to start blowing cold, then another couple of mins to get real cold, it takes 10 mins to cool cabin temp, especially on a scorcher like today (i burnt me ass on the leather at beulieu today frown.gif ) !

This place http://www.ttzd.com/tech/autocctech.html

will help you run diagz, dont know how helpful that will be.

I was also warned that the replacement for r12 is at a higher psi and they will want to convert your car, but i think this is a load of crap.

Some would say that your problem would be better if it was a leak or low pressure, but given that the aircon on zeds is quite a complicated subsystem, i'd hope for a busted compressor and nothing else, coz im sure some kind soul would sell ya one for £80.

Good luck

Glen

My aircon is working great so far even with the funny replacement gas he gave me for now - didnt want to waste R12 if leaking. Discovered from manual that system can run to more than 300psi and has a pressure relief valve at 540psi! Also full auto aircon zeds keep the compressor on all the time when aircon auto selected - and only put the elecy fan on when the motor is really hot so probably that side is all fine.

Zo cool.

A friend of mine had his GTIR aircon recharged (also an R12 system) with R134a.. It worked fine for a month, and now (two months on) hardly works at all..

of course he *could* have a leak, so that might be misleading... Just don't count yer chickens smile.gif

About refilling R12 systems with R134a..

More than a week and the aircon is working great so far. No signs of leaks anywhere. Get air at 7 Degrees C out of the vent!

My aircon guy says he used R416A (not 134A)with flourescent dye in the oil to show up leaks. This refridgerant is the new stuff. It runs at lower or similar pressure. Similar efficiency - so he says. Now for chemistry lesson - has similar molecular size so same leak rate. Anybody know different about this stuff? I would have preferred the original R12 but if the new stuff works why change back?

The 134A stuff used in most cars now runs at too high a pressure for R12 systems and needs system mods to work properly. It is also not as efficient. So I'm told.

WillieO - do you mean the R416A runs at similar or lower pressure to R12, or to R134A?

Aaron

The R416A apparently runs at a lower pressure than R12. I just looked up stuff on the net. Seems R416A is a blend containing 59%R134A plus other components to mimic the performance of R12.

Straight R134A runs much higher pressures. It also seems that it is recommended to use R416A to replace R134A as well now as it works even better in those systems.

Hi guys

I've had by Z (auto/import) since Xmas. I had the air-con regassed at the start of the summer and all appeared well with the system set to Auto. However, if I try to demist the windscreen (by pressing the "windscreen" button) I don't get much air coming out of the vents under the 'screen. If I press the Auto button again, I get loads of air out of the centre console vents.

Any ideas?

Just and add-on comment. I was just going to leave my aircon not working as this is UK after all. Aircon guy told me that what happens eventually is your compressor shuts off with the low pressure switch cut-out

Hmmm - touching on a sore point this one frown.gif

I had my aircon recharged a few months back. I had the same problem with the fan not coming on. After looking through various tech info and stuff I thought everything was ok. Anyway, after being sat with the aircon on for about 4 minutes while stationary, guess what - the bastard pressure relief valve blew all my £75 worth of gas into the ozone layer frown.gif

So be CAREFULL!!!

CheerZ,

What gas did they fill yours with? If it was R134A it does work at much higher pressures and maybe was enough to hit the 540psi blow off. You must have looked and sounded a treat with all that gas coming out!

The aircon people should have monitored the pressures for a while before giving it the ok.

Another thing, If the blow off valve operated then it should only have let off enough pressure to get below the 540psi limit. The blow off valve is on the compressor. Are you sure it wasnt the fusible temperature plug on the receiver drier that blew. It would let everything go. I thnk it melts if the fluid gets too hot.

Even if the auxiliary electric fan hadnt come on your main viscous coupled fan should have been doing the cooling. Was it so hot at the time?
