Its deffo a love hate thing.

Messing with my boost controller today to increase the boost and no joy, i can get her to 17/18 psi and peaking at 19 when it was colder but not above that...i know its a lot anyway but if you want more power you gotta have more boost!!!

Even at the boost controllers full settings it stays at 17/19 psi??

BUT

here we go...just did a ecu check and guess what code came up??

You guested it code 34...b*****d

Is this why i cant boost any higher?

Would i be able to boost that high while the ecu puts me in safety boost?

I am in the process of resetting my ecu to see if that will sort it.

Cheers

Kirbz

(looks like some of my mods might have to wait:cry: until i get this sorted)

A boost controller will over rule the safty boost. That is one major advantage of having jets, as the boost will lower when det is detected. A boost controller will completely over rule and saftey boost will not activate.

going on from what stu says the controller in un-aware of the safety boost but the ecu may still retard timing etc

not sure if this would stop your max boost though

The way boost jets work, it tricks the wastegate in thinking its runing normal boost, by starving if of some if the pressure. Even though you are running 15psi, the wastegate still thinks you are running at 9. So when saftey boost is activated the waste gate drops the pressure to what it thinks is 7psi, but because its being tricked, it will drop to about 9-10 or so, but it will drop.

A boost controller actually takes complete control of the wastegate. If you dont have boost jets in and have a boost controller, the wastegate will try to close at 9psi but the boost controller will hold it open regardless. Its the same with safty boost. The wastegate will want to close a 7psi but the controller will keep it open.

Turn the controller off when safty boost is activated and you will be running 7psi.

However when safty boost is activated it effects the timing of the engine which will slow it down slightly, but should not effect your boost level with a boost controller.

mmm just reset my ecu and still code 34??

Is it worth over riding it or leave it or bite the bullett and get it replaced:rolleyes:

Kirbz

Sorry to state the obvious but you may have a boost leak which doesn't really manifest itself until higher pressures...

Took my ECU a good couple of hours to reset last week.

If your det sensor circuit is trolleyed you're timing's going to be retarded as Jaffa says - don't think ecu reset will make any difference - AFAIK cycling the ignition should be enough if the problem was temporary - if not an ECU reset won't help.

Engine will run hotter if timing is retarded and still running high boost - probably won't help :(

Just a quick question to boost jets...

I drove a 300zx with boost jets and was told that you also get "goosing" as the wastegate is fooled by the boost. Is this right?

Not that I don't believe him.., Just putting my mind at rest...

Also 2 other questions.

1. How much would a hydralic tappet cost to fix.

2. I've been told that getting a bolster recovered can cost approx. £40. Does that sound right and does anyone know where I can get it done locally... I live in Stafford...

No you dont get goosing of the waste gate. You MAY get a goose noise from your recirculating valves. This wont cause any damamge, its just the noise of the air whizzing round the hoses and creating a short noise like when blow over the top of an empty bottle.

Sorry cant help you with the other things.

Kirbz, and hour and a half sounds OK to reset it. You could try longer.

Not true - You got to have more air/oxygen. If you exceed the design possibilities for the turbocharger all you get is higher pressure heated turbulent air which carries less oxygen than lower pressure cold air. Result chocolate pistons, fried rings and a big rebuild bill but you can tell your friends you were running 19psi for a while.

Sounds like your turbos shouldnt be stretched past 15psi anyway and you might need to invest in bigger intercoolers. Plus your chip wont be fuel mapped for 15psi plus boost of even cold air.

Everything has an optimum then its downhill from there.

Woops didnt read all that stuff at the foot of your post - looks like you got everything bar an altimeter!

Still 18psi is a lot of boost!

;)

The child in me needs more boost.

I have a long friendly bit of banter on which car is quicker.

My mate who owns a garage has a typr r sti impreza and he's modded it to the extreme, recently adding a huge turbo, new ecu and it re mapped to 1.8 bar  b*****d's pushing 400+ bhp now so i need to be able to catch him.

I know over 60 i will waste him but its that old upto 60 thing, i just think its just impossible to get a 300 to less than 4.5 sec 60. His impreza will do 3.5ish to 60 now!!

Mine still looks better but i need more power so looks like the cheque books coming out for more mods

:slap:

Dont tell the wife

Kirbz

Never mind! With a zed you have a power to weight ratio problem and only 2 wheel traction. Your mates transmission and clutch will be a pile of dust on the road soon with that much power.

Anyway the mods you have should be making 500+bhp once the 550s are on.

I've driven my neigbours new 300+bhp sti and it is incredible to 100mph easily wasting a stock zed (2 seconds). Plus it sticks to the road. Unless you are into 120mph plus racing I think its a fight you cant win against a 400bhp one.

Besides a zed looks the part. A Scooby for all its techno brilliance has looks that are defo an acquired taste.

Kirbz,

Have you actually fitted the Nismo injectors yet or are you running 1.3bar of boost on standard ones?

  • Author

Hi

There standard injectors but i have two extra ones!! to handle the extra fuel needed.

But when funds allow i will have the extra injectors removed and 555's put in and a new ecu...when funds allow;)

Kirbz

Correct me if I am wrong but arent you supposed to disconnect the boost selenoids in order to be able to bybass the det sensor?

In this way the car will not go into safety boost if det sensor detects detonation.

You can be in safety mode only if you boost controller is switched off.

As for boost leaks: I assume that if you are having boost leaks you might still get 18/19 psi but not as quick as if you have no boost leaks. And maybe boost leaks might be your problem.

Try a vaccum test and see if everything is ok.

Also double check your boost selenoids.
