Whats the score with the top link mod and is it supposed to stop the Z from destroying the inside edge of the front tyres?

It allows you to adjust the camber of the wheel and theoretically stop the tyres wearing unevenly (if that is your problems). However, if done wrongly then I would expect it's very easy to make it MUCH worse !

According to my service records both top links were changed at about 80,000miles.

Guess its normal to wear out about then.

One of my top links was replaced by a helpful Nissan dealer, apparantely it had too much movement in it. So 5 months later I take it back there for the MOT and they say "it's knackered - too much movement". "What?", say I, "Not that one you replaced not 5 months ago?". "Oh!" sez the dealer and wanders off to look for an excuse. So they try to blame it on faulty parts, contact Nissan and find out that there is supposed to be some movement and that it's actually the other one which doesn't have any movement which potentially has a problem. Anyway, long story short, they get a service bulletin from Nissan (relating to Primera's & Z32's because they have the same type of front suspension) telling them how to measure the play, I get a copy and EACH year they have MOT'd it they say that there is a problem and each year I give them my copy of the bulletin and it passes !!
