Have just bought tt auto but really wanted manual one, the reason being a lot of people said the manual gearboxs cant handle the power is there any truth in this??

I know its a bit late but i need to find out as see some of the guys buy autos, (more power/torque ?) then convert to manual, maybe some stronger gearbox???

Clutch is the limiting factor.

Unless you can find a cheap gearbox and do the work yourself,

better to sell the auto and buy a manual.

Anyone here? Or any of the other clubs/forums?

Stock gearboxes are mostly fine for stock power. If you uprate power, you need to make sure all your components (incl gearbox) suit the mods you have made.

People convert autos to manuals (mainly) because their autobox has problems and conversion to manual looks cheaper than a proper rebuild of the autobox. But it is a complete PITA.

You can (so I am told) do a really good conversion from auto to manual and (because of the smaller turbos which spool up quicker) get more torque earlier in the rev range.

If you want a manual, look after the auto and sell it to someone who wants an auto while you are looking for a good manual.

Conversion for the wrong reasons will ruin an auto and give you a hybrid which may not be perfect.

PS this is no value judgement on auto vs manual as this is an old / recurring discussion. My car is a manual, lots of people like autos, a good conversion can be a gas and when I joined the LLOC, boy I was glad of an autobox.

I heard this too - I think it sounds likely. I think it may be because those most likely to drive a 300ZX really fast go for a manual usually AND the nature of an Auto means even if you boot it, the autobox 'protects' the gears more than a manual, so 2nd hand stock manuals are more liekly to have gear problems than autos.

Autos can have cooked and degraded ATF if not changed sufficiently, so need to look at that and see if it's dark/brown/black.

what is ATF & i will change it, & dont understand all these codes?????????????

Stock manual boxes can hold upto 600bhp it is said. It can take 500bhp no problems, but with an uprated clutch.

However stock autoboxes wont really last long with 400-450bhp and you need to get an uprated one.

So its either Manual and change the clutch when you get more power, or Auto and change the box when you get more power.

All I will say I have not heard one person say their manual box is not working, but clutches do go, but you expect that.

Personal opinion & Knowledge:

I have an auto and i'm having problems now for the second time. The 1st time i rebuilted it and i add an alc and the box never worked better since i had the car but know i have the same problems again and i'll convert it into manual.

I have study the subject a lot and from what i know if you don't have a lot of money then convert it into manual. If you want serious hp and drag racing then you have to replace everything inside your box with aftermarket parts and get a nice converter and there is not the need of an alc or things like that. But you'll spend around $6000.If you do that you can raise boost at the line and launch your car!!! I have seen one with this box and hks 2530bb turbos doing 11.8s on normal tires and normal gas.If you install an Alc on a modified car with stock box it won't last.

The manual box of our car is 1 of the best and it's the same with the skyline r33 2.5l.In Japan serious modified s15 use the zx's box after modifiying there housing handling more thatn 550rwhp.

Regarding the power gain from converting an auto into a manual is y cams are different than the originals manuals and the cars gains a lot of torque.

It'll cost you £1200 plus to get an autobox reconditioned whereas it'll only cost you £600 to get a manual box done.

My car was an auto before I converted it to manual & whilst I did enjoy driving it before, there is no comparison. My car is much more fun to drive now!

I had my auto box reconed last year, cost £1400.

Theres been alot of talk about manual V auto. My Z is the first auto I have owned & I will not go back to manual!

Hey Pambos!

Listen to shaunmac, manual is the one.

Auto is great for repmobile and tooling around town

but it's no fun in a sports car.
