Most ignorant tt owner seeks help from more knowledgable associates.

My 1991 tt import made a horrible noise when starting up today. Sounds like a fan blade running against a metal surface. Is sensitive to speed of engine. Heart is beating too fast, wallet is cowering in the corner, face is looking vacant......All answers avidly read, but please be quick, the wife (God bless her!) is sharpening the cutlery with a wicked grin on her face. I think it's me or my baby. Help....

any smoke out the back of the car ?

where does the noise appear to be coming from ?.

Does it go after the car is warm ?

Too quick for the rest of your reply.

I was too frightened about further damage to leave the car running for too long.

The noise seems to come from the right hand side of the plenum looking at the car from the front.

sounds like the noise a busted aircon compressor makes, but i could be completely wrong ;). Try turning the climate off, if its still there then its more serious.

Further to my comments yesterday, firstly the noise seems even louder today.

Again I wouldn't let it run for too long.

I'm also now not so sure as to where the sound is coming from. This morning it seems to be coming from the rear of the engine in front of the driver.

Has anyone any info on what my problem may be, and/or who they would recommend I entrust to repair it, local to Hemel Hempstead.

Your comments appreciated,

Simon.

Simon, did you try what Clarkey suggests?? Think this could be the same noise I'm getting. Mine is intermittent when aircon is on but disappears when aircon if off.

Cheers!

Rob,

The noise continues aircon on or not. Had someone come out part dismantle the driver's side ancilliaries to look at the turbo. He diagnosed worn bearings in the turbo as the rotor had too much vertical play in it. Interestingly he hasn't been back to me yet. Speaking to the mechanic who has dealt with my "lesser" cars, he put me in touch with someone else who specialises in turbo work. He's come round to listen and feels the problem could be related to a loose or damaged flywheel. The squeal appears to be attempting to catch up with the speed of the engine, but is not consistent and also only occurs intermittently.

I'm hoping to get the car round to him for a more detailed look. I'm just more puzzled than before. Just talked round "she who must be obeyed" as well. Looks like a lot of grovelling and tears may go to waste.

If I get any further info I'll post it, as I've received excellent advice from many contributors on here.

Pray it's easy and cheap to repair for me,

Simon.:(

Hi Simon,

Good luck mate!!

I've identified my problem now...had a root around under the bonnet last night and found the aircon belt tensioner pulley had dropped off (!) Presumably the noise was due to the nut dropping off and the pulley wobbling about/belt slipping before it finally dropped off. Got the pulley and washer back from inside the splashguard but lost the nut :(

Not suggesting that your prob is going to be as simple as mine but it's definately worth checking the belts and pulleys on the front of the engine, a dreadful noise for a simple problem.

Cheers!

So , let that be a lesson to us all ,,,,keep a check on all our nuts ,,and big noises are not all they seem,,,here endeth our "z" lesson today , a zmen.

Simon we all are sighing and hoping you will be joyful with the outcome when you know ,,,a zmen.

Good luck mate !!
