Got some carb cleaner and gave the throttle bodies a quick clean last night! I think I did it all properly, took off the pipes, opened them up, loosened all the black cack off with a toothbrush, wiped it clean with a soft cloth, put everything back together and then screwed it all up tight again!!

My problem is that the idle is now at about 1000rpm instead of 7-800 as it was before. Do you think it will drop after a few drives or should I reset/adjust something??

The car runs and accelerates fine! Although I did get blasted by an 03 porsche 911 turbo last night, mind you when we were stopped at the lights he did mention that it's not very often that he needs to boot it to leave people!!:D :D :D

The TPS was probably last adjusted given the state of the throttle bodies. Now they are clean, maybe the TPS just needs a tweak to bring idle down?

An ECU reset cant hurt either.

Ya wha'???

How hell i do dat??

Cheers.....:D

Hehe top_search.gif is your friend.

The Throttle Position Sensor is the little fagpacket sized black box on the front right of the engine, next to the TB, looking from front. It has 2 screws, undoing one will allow the box to move, and adjust the voltage across it. Plenty of info been posted before.

Resetting the ECU is simpler - just disconnect the battery for an hour. Do this first actually, then see if the idle sorts itself out, I think you're supposed to do this after cleaning TBs anyway, so the TPS adjust might not be necessary.

LOL:D

I've quite 'idle' myself so i just thought I'd post it, knowing how great you lot are!!!!

Cheers chaps!!

Another prob bits the dust!!

Dont touch the tps to adjust the idle!

Mine has a blob of white paint on the TPS screws that shows it has not been touched since new.

There is an electronically controlled valve at the back of the plenum rhs called the AAC. This holds the tickover at a preset rpm controlled by the ecu. I had the same high tickover after cleaning the throtle bodies.

You need to reset that. You take the connector off it to stop the ecu trying to control it then set the tickover manually first by a screwdriver. Check the manual! It is quite hard to get at with the crewdriver wanting to be where the battery is. So you need a short one! Set tickover to 700rpm for a TT or 650 for a manual NA - 720 Auto NA.

Dont tinker with the tps it affects so many other systems - eg auto box change points.

Willie,

I did my throttle body clean today. They weren't that dirty, but I've always found that with most parts in the car, it seems as if it was well looked after.

Anyway, the instructions I used from TwinTurbo. net indicated that after disconnecting battery (at the beg. of the work) the idle would be erratic and could take up to 250 miles to re-learn.

But it's interesting what your saying about the connector.

Could you clearly describe where this part is and if you have a link with a diagram even better?

Thanks,

Geoff.

That connector is a right royal PITA to get to and then get off. Its on the rear passenger corner of the plenum. Look next to the battery, and you should see a unit on the back with a rubber hose bending at 90 degrees and going on to it - this is the idle valve assembly. Remove this hose and squirt in a good dose of carb cleaner - when you clean the throttle bodies all the crap gets washed to the back of the plenum and clogs up the idle valve assembly. This should sort your idle out but if not you need to adjust your base idle.

Now, to reset the base idle, you need to remove the idle valve connector. This is yellow in colour and is attached to the unit described above. Get the car warmed up to operating temperature, disconnect the connector, and use the screw to increase/decrease the revs to ensure they are within spec.

Just did the battery thing this morning and connected it again now!! It worked a treat!

Lovely jubbly!!!!!:D

Thanks for that description Andy. I'll look tommorow an see.

Although today when I took the car for a spin the idle and responsiveness was alot better.

Geoff.

You will aways bet stuffed by a Porsche 911 Turbo. They are 450bhp stock, weigh a lot less, 4 wheel drive and state of the art Traction Control.

I know that!! Just wanted to see how much/little of a "stuffing" (leave it!!!) I would take and TBH i was not even a little disappointed with the way the zed performed!:D
