Right. I`ve come into possession of a spare bonnet (cheers Bigbscan:) ) with a view to venting the living daylights out of it. ;)

After looking over old posts on the subject I came away with the knowledge that bonnet vents are, generally speaking a "good thing" (surprise!:D ) except when they let water in or don`t actually work due to poor placement..."a bad thing"...:p

What I need to know is where on the bonnet are the optimal places for vents to be fitted to get the most cold air in and hot air out. Also, what design is most effective...louvres, inverted/raised scoops etc.

Thanks to my years at Art college, and my continuing work, I`m fairly handy when it comes to sculpting stuff, so I`m planning to carve the final vent designs (if it isn`t a louvre) out of extruded polystyrene before moulding out of fibreglass.

Any information would be appreciated!:)

simple but looks great and effective

but my favourite has to be

but none of that answers your questions ;)

Id say the border design would be best for cooling, whilst looking great at the same time. The big vent right behind the fan so the hot air from the rad escaping through there, and the smaller vents to the sides where theres loads of heat from the exhausts/turbos gonna be lingering.

I believe all you need are vents for hot to air escape as the cold air in would be provided by the standard front spoiler. The ideal position of these vents would be towards the windscreen.

Air in at front including fan assistant to engine and out at rear of bonnet. As the fan is constantly on to cool the engine and radiator you need to vent it after convection cooling of engine at rear.

This is my opinion from my understanding of the Zed...of course, on the other hand, in terms of cooling, you can't make it any worse than it already is :D :D :D .

Good luck

Yeah Clarkey, the Border bonnet looks great

Well although mine look shite! they do work very well;)

I know the Border one is real nice but IMHO It will let too much water inside the engine bay:(

Thanks for the photos Clarkey. On a purely cosmetic level the second pic looks a bit too Fast and the Furious for my liking, but if it works.... I`d say yours were a long way from lookin shite Mac, but I gotta admit it`s not a design that I`ve been considering. The Border layout of vents does appear to have a lot in its favour, but it`s a valid comment about the water...(though I should be able to fabricate catch-trays for at least some of the vents...) Hmmm...I think the trick is going to be finding the right balance...Any more suggestions?

Hey, those vents that james has had done are the ones that I want! Kinda like XK8 styling, I need it doing badly as when the car gets too hot it starts missing.....

Where did james get it done and how much did it cost????:)

I actually found out about buying some XK8 vents but fook me they were pricey! Can't remember how much exactly but no-way could you justify the money, it was hundreds. Toyed with the idea of having the last 2 louvres either end progressively smaller to look like kinda egg shaped but the guy there showed me some photo's of that on a car and I didn't like it. Its all down to personal taste though - there were so many options for the louvres, how many, position, sloped or straight, how wide etc etc.

Yep, the louvres on James` car look good, they suit the shape and line of the bonnet. Was checking out the aftermarket Jun lid design the other day which impressed me...

Thanks guys, if anyones got any other ideas over optimal placement/design I`ll be glad to hear `em....now....where did I put my craft knife...;)
