URGENT: which heater matrix pipe goes where????

Hi folks

I'm about to reconnect my water pipes, from the back of the engine, to the metal pipes connected to the heater matrix. Only problem is I've forgotten which on goes where  .

Standing in front of the engine, there is a left and a right pipe on the back of the engine which connects to the metal pipes, running through the firewall to the footwell & heater matrix, one at higher level and slightly to the left of the other.

Does the left pipe, at engine rear, connect to the lower right metal pipe to the heater matrix or the higher left?????

Response much appreciated.

OK. No one seems to know so far.:(

I'm guessing that the left goes to the lower right heater matrix pipe. If I am wrong please let me know.

Left pipe goes to higher left pipe - right pipe goes to lower right pipe - all looking from front of car ;)

My guess didn't work very well at all as it didn't fit well.

I've spent this weekend replacing the heater matrix and what a PITA.

I've followed the dash in method and found that leaving the foam seal in to undo the most difficult screw holding the pipes in place was next to suicidal- too bloody fustrating. I ended up pushing the foam out through the firewall and then wedging it back in after was much easier as you can SEE what you are doing.

Ouch!!! Nasty job! TBH I'd always do it with the dash out - its often far easier/quicker to remove the parts in the way than to struggle with them left in. Dash removal isn't that bad anyway. Oh well, maybe next time eh... LOL

Glad you got it done though.

I thought about doing the job with the dash out but there seems to be far too many bits & bobs to remove and put aside and then put back in. The thought of all those parts just makes me wince.

Now that I've done the work with the dash in I think the next time should be plain sailing. You do have to be quite creative and resourceful with what tools you have though.

I assume with the dash out method you still have the PITA screw holding the pipes in place to contend with. This was the most time consuming for me until I resigned to the fact that I would never succeed without removing the foam piece. Once removed it was much easier to uncrew. However, screwing it back in was way more tricky as you can't hold the screw, screw driver and feel for the hole at the same time without dropping the screw to god knows where.

Eventually, I ended up supergluing the screw to the screw driver, pushed it to about the right location and rest it on the pipes, went under dash, guided the screw into place and bingo!!! The glue was strong enough to hold the screw to the s'driver and weak enough to pull the s'driver away once the screw was secured.

I've just flushed and replaced the coolant and will no doubt spend the next few days topping up.

Glad I did it as I had put it off for two months since bypassing the heater matrix.

Advice to future dash in do-ers: if you have big forearms, two left hands, bad hand-eye co-ordination, no patience or inflexible then DON'T do it with this method.:p

Hi Van,

Now you're a dab hand at it do you want to do mine :D :D please...

Dean.

Damn...I knew someone would ask me to help.

No probs Dean as you live nearish to me. When are you thinking of doing it and have you got the relevant parts????

Won't be attempting it till next month or so but would like to get it done before winter if possible...don't fancy freezing.

Are there any other ancillary bits I will need other thatn the matrix itself. Where did you go for your parts ???

Dean.

Dean

I got my matrix from MJP for about £155. You may also want to get a bottle of Rad Hib thing from MJP as well. Anti-freeze coolant of course would be handy.

Van

Cheers Van,

When I have got the parts and are ready to give it a go I'll shout your name...;)

Dean.:)
