Hi all,

Bought my Jap zed with a distinct whine from the gearbox, but quite a smooth change. After investigation it turns out that my 1st and 2nd gears were shot and the bearings were all done in too!

Got quoted 1200 +vat to refurb it and get a 12 month guarantee OR spend 600 +vat for a uk spec box from a breaker with 30 days guarantee.

Of course, being a tight fisted zed driver with plans for future expenditure (!) I went for the cheap option.

Well, 1st and 2nd are now awful, really horrible clunky change, hard to do at speed, so it sometimes grinds on the way up! 3rd up seem fine, but the whine has gone completely.

Now I suspect that this box has it's days numbered, but I'd love to hear from anyone with some guidance and help.

Ta.

No guidance or help from me mate, I'm new to this ZX lark, but mines a 97 jap TT manual and it changes silky smooth at low/normal driving speeds and little clunky in hard acceleration. Also from 5th, when going to 4th (for overtaking, etc;) ) it's sometimes tricky to find first time, but these errors I'm putting down to lack of oneness with that car at the moment (I've only had it a couple of weeks). The one thing I know is not my fault is an intrmittent knocking noise in reverse. I was thinking of putting slick 50 into the box as a friend did this to his Pug 309 several years ago and improved the car's changing 100%. Any info/advice for me would be welcome too.............

Cheers.....:)

Not in a Z but I have added various additives to manual boxes and they have all worked to some degree. Not fussy like an auto, so I would go for it.

sure i've heard bad things about Slick 50... but apparently Redline MT90's really good

I too have HEARD many bad things about Slick 50, but I hae used it for more than 20 years. Never had a problem. Having said that its not in my Z, and I dont really know why.

£1200 + VAT !! Two hundred more and you can have a brand new one from Nissan!! (Or less if you go through Courtesyparts - but I hate to think what the postage will be like!)

I'd try some Redline MT-90 in it. Sorted out a dodgy synchro I had on 3rd gear.

Cheers, Sounds like red-line might be the way to go.......unless anyone else has some secret formula.....Extra virgin olive oil mixed with Ghee.....hmmmmm:confused:

Sounds interesting, now imagine I have found a bottle of Redline (any idea where?)

Next problem, where do I put it and how much?

You can get redline straight from the distributer and they give discounts for club members.

They've recently moved, the new details are:

Delta Oil Ltd.

Unit F1 Market Overton Ind. Est.

Market Overton

Rutland

LE15 7PP

Tel: 01572 768311

Fax: 01572 768249

I usually ask for Gavin Scott who has sorted oil etc out for a few of the 200 board.

Thanks Dave, I'll give them a call. Now, where do I have to put it?

 :D
