I'm looking at buying a TT import on a 90 with 70k miles. Can you tell me if the engine will still be strong with this mileage. It has had the cambelt and water pump, clutch changed. Will i be looking at buying a lot of problems or is this mileage ok?

what kind of mileage are you guys running now, and has anyone with similar mileage had any problems around 70k.

Cheers

Hi Chris

Difficult question to answer (so many variables). If it's been looked after and well serviced then they will go a long way before any major mechanical work is required, mine has 107k on the clock on original engine and turbos, other people on here have higher mileages than that but not sure if much work has been carried out.

If it's an import are you talking 70k kilometers ? that's only mid 50k miles I think, or have you already converted it ?

Don't forget this is a 13 year old car and parts do fail. Check for any funny engine noises, smoke from exhaust after extended idle or when booting it, colour of the oil on the dipstick.

If you're not sure, see if you can get someone who knows the car to check it over and check the fault codes in the ecu, as if you buy a pup they cost a lot to put right.

hope this is of some help, good luck

Robin

Cheers Robin,

Its 70k Miles btw i'll take a look at the buyers guide :)

Chris

This is a very interesting subject that is usually overlooked when buying a Z. My mechanical knowledge is limited, but I know one thing. Maintain an engine correctly, and you can only help it last longer. Therefore, if an engine is thrashed, it will last longer if it is maintained than if not.

Right! SUcking eggs bit over.

My Z has 129K. I have been told that it sounds as sweet as a nut, and I would tend to agree. I have heard Zs with half the mileage sound like a bag of nails by comparison. My Z has been very well maintained through its life and has had the oil changed every 6 months before my ownership, and every 3K whilst with me.

The TT engine is very tough provided it is looked after and 50K on one of these babies is peanuts. I hope to get atleast 200K out of mine. However, I would suggest that you do the obligatory turbo and cylinder compression tests.

Hope that helps

Cos

164k miles on original engine.........is that a record?

I'll beat that with 183k miles on original engine. Rust will get her before the engine dies

There are plenty of other variables though, your engine may be strong, but you can still spend thousands on all sorts of other bits that wear out. Gearboxes, clutches, suspension rods and bushes.....I'm sure every single club member could add something new to this list!

The older the car, the sooner you have to start spending to replace bits that wear out - it only stands to reason.

Not trying to talk you out of it, by any means, just want you to be prepared to spend some dosh on the car and keep it running sweetly.

Good luck!
