That was Linus, but the bloke who invented Linux is also caled Linus.

Erm depneds whether you have the .tar.gz (or .tgz) file or rpm.

if you have the rpm, cd to the directory the file is in and type "rpm -i fliename" (without quotes). Might whinge about some dependancies though.

if you ahve the tar.gz file cd to the directory the file is in and type tar xvzf filename, this will unzip into another directory, cd to that directory and look at the INSTALL and README files for how to do it. usually it's type ./configure (press enter) wait for it to finish, then type make (press enter) wait for i to finish, then type make install & press enter.

you should then jsut be able to type the executable name, or create a shortcut on hte desktop for it.

Y r u trying to use Linux??

It's very specialised.

You might as well try to use Phillips 2000 for video recording...

Great thanks.

How do I get the command prompt up?

LOL, there should either be an icon for it or get a 'run program box' up, there might be on in the applications, or maybe if you right click on the desktop, when you get one type console

I use linux too, it's my job. :)

Its been over a year since I used this last and I cant remember shit. :(

It says it need to be a root. What the hell does that mean?

Stuart

You will find all you want to know about Linux by using Google and searching the web.

You could even buy a book or two.

This thread should not be in this forum - hardly Zed specific!

LOL means you have to log in as root.

do you know the root passwd?

if so either log in to the machine as root, or from a console type 'su -' then it'll ask you for the root passwd, enter that and you will now be root.

Root is the "god" account that allows you to do anything.
