my turbos are gonna be replaced soon and one of the jobs i've seen recomended to have done at the same time is removing the EGR's. is there a kit for this or could the mechanic do it by themself.

and whos bright idea was it to invent these things in the first place?!:D i'm guessing you would gain a noticable amount of improvement in performance with these removed?

There is no great performance increase, it is just that it has a tendency to go wrong, and you then have to do major engine work to replace/remove them!

There is a kit from america but you can do it with a bolt and two pennies stuck to the underside of pleum with heat resistant JB weld!

Mark

cheers for clearing that up. i'll ring courtesy about the kit, or i'll asl the mechanics at progress engineering if their familiar with the 2 pennies trick:D

As Mark says, no real performance gain, you're just preventing something that is (largely) unnecessary from causing any potential problems..

In essence, they have a tendency to break down (the diaphram in the valve, specifically), which means that instead of letting exhaust gas back into the intake only on cruise, they start letting it in all the time, and/or boost pressure out, depending on which is higher (exhaust pressure or boost pressure). That can cause anything from loss of boost to detonation due to extra crappy gasses in the intake air.

Bugger of a job to change with the engine in the car, so might as well ditch it (slightly higher HC emissions on cruise, and slightly higher cylinder temps, but nothing even noticeable on my car).

The kit from the states is manufactured by 300 Degree - very nice kit (very well made), but expensive ($55) and they seem to take forever to make them - I ordered mine from Phuong (http://www.eatricezone.com) and they took over two months to get to Phuong! I only got one in the end because someone else returned their kit, in fact... so if you can, I'd go the homebrew route..

Over and out,

Aaron

i think the 2 penny job will have to do cos i havent got 2 months to wait, its closer to 2 weeks i have to get all the work done!:(

as you have done the whole engine out and turbo replacement (amongst a million other mods!:D ) can you advice me on what else needs to be ordered before the work is started? i'll do any jobs which can be done with the engine in myself as i want to get to know the car myself (and save a bit of money while im at it!;) ) but anything that could possibly wair out and is hard to do with the engine in i'll get done by the mechanic along with the turbos.

Some things that spring to mind;

All the water feed lines for the turbo's & plenum (about 17 little 8mm hoses).

The rear main crank seal (oil seal) if you're splitting the box off the engine.

I'd be inclined to replace the exhaust manifold->head gaskets too, and fit EGT's..

cheers arron. sorry to be dumb but what are EGT sensors. did a search and found that they go in the exhaust but what do they do?

by the way, i've pretty much decided that if the warrenty doesnt pay for the work on my car im gonna get the tubs reconditioned rather than buy the ones off you, as i really want piece of mind that they wont go again. once the engine comes out this time i really dont want to ever have to get it done again. if i change my mind then i'll let you know.
