Hey everyone,

 

I am new to the site and looking for some advice before I take the plunge and buy one of these beautiful beasts.

 

I have heard varying stories about the 300ZXs, such as that they are prone to breaking easily and smoking from an early age. What sort of things should I be looking at when buying a used one? What is the best model to buy and how much would I be looking at? Im really wanting a Twin Turbo as the insurance was surprisingly cheap.

 

If there is any useful links or anyone has any advice that would be good to me about anything on these dream machines, then please tell me!!!! I am desperate to get a great car as my little 1.5 Mazda 323F just isnt cutting it now!

welcome on board! There's a buyers guide on the the FAQ's section. Best thing to do is read as much as you can on here and other Z sites before going to view and test drive.

Don't get suckered into buying the first one you see though as there are a couple of dogs around.

 

If you can, buy from an established member on here as they will almost certainly have been looked after and you check their old posts to see what they've done.

 

Also get someone who knows these cars to check it over before purchase.

PPS Was the insurance for an import as there are more of them around, higher insurance, less Service history, but usually fewer miles and no rust

What are the running costs that are assosciated with the 300ZX? I will only be doing 7000 miles a year in her at the most. Im just looking for a rough guide.

If youre doing short runs in cold weather your mpg can be as little as 11, but on runs mines returned nearly 30mpg which im pleased with.

 

I worked out that in 12 months of ownership of mine, having had nothing major go wrong its cost me £1000 to keep on the road, just sevicing and bits and bobs.

 

This doesnt include insurance and petrol, if i added that up id\ probably decide to sell it!!!;)

 

Still around £20 a week maintinence isnt bad i think!

I got 31mpg driving to Scotland, sat in traffic for an hour, using aircon for half the way and with the boot fully loaded. Believe me I was the most surprised.

 

But short aroung town I get about 15=17mpg.

 

As for the insurance quote, that will be for a UK Z.

 

All UK Zs are Twin Turbo, 2+2 and have T-Top. So if its a None Turbo or 2 seater you are thinking to buy it is a Japanese Import. But a lot of Japanese are Twin Turbo 2+2 seaters though.

 

Japanese Imports are about 20% more expsensive to insure than UK and are more of a pain to insure as mot all places do that.

 

If you get a Z, save up some money every month for your car. Its one of those things when nothing could happen for months and then a wheel bearing will go, and the parts for a Z are very expensive as most parts for the Z are only used on the Z.

I am not far from the kingdom and have learned a bit in my near 3 years ownership!

 

There's a few of us around here.

 

There are one or two importers you can look around - see them on autotrader. I got mine privately from a forum member.

 

Also Peter Hood in Livingston has 3 which is one more than he and his wife need really - maybe you can talk him out of one!

 

Also Dick300 has a hot one that goes quite quick down the quarter mile a Crail.

Willie, my girlfriend stays in Bo'ness so we spend a fair bit of time in Falkirk. Maybe before I decide to take the plunge and buy one you would be prepared to show me round yours and you could tell me what to look for and stuff?

hi ,,, just be carefull what you buy as all that glitters is not gold i brought a jap 300zx n/a in march from a garage that told me it had been fully serviced HA HA ,,, the fact is most jap imports are here because they have been sold because it is time for the major service , and it will not come cheap , a good garage run by a friend did the job for me and he found the plugs were the factory fitted ones l.e. never been changed the radiator top hose fitting had been cut in half and had been black gooed on as had most other pipes all in all it has cost me £3000 to get it back as it should be , i expected it to be expensive , just not quite that much , but i did ask for anything that was going to need fixing to be done , as anything under the bonnet is a real pain to get at so i had it all done in one go , also it saves a hell of a lot in labour costs all in all i now have a very good car just be carefull as people do use these hard and parts are expensive , like £40 for a top hose, spark plugs around £10 each it soon mounts up

 

unless you are sure of the condition of a car leave it alone i am good with cars and i did not see all the faults in my car

 

if i had been more sensible i guess i would have asked the club members for help in finding a good car , i hope my thoughts help you and any others
