The boy racer in me wonders what is best for a fast start that wont break the autobox.

Lots of revs then into D or quietly into D them floor it?

Anyone know?

Yes I know manuals are faster to 60!

I'd like to know this too.

I've never really dared give my Z big revs and drop it into drive. Seems a bit dodgy.

Power mode, Overdrive off and keep it in first to the red line is probably best biggrin.gif

Oh and hope that the turbos get spinning quickly and the car doesnt bog down as mine seems to be doing intermitantly and very embarrasingley!

If you watch lots of yank films then it seems to be stand on the throttle and bung it into drive, I would have thought a more gentle approach would be put it into drive, hold the brakes on with left foot and bring revs up with the right, then let the brakes off and watch the world go backwards. However, I think this is flawed and I have to give it some more thought.

The best way is to sell your auto and get a amnual lol

Yeah! Put the car carefully into drive, move off slowly and drive to the nearest shop to have a manual box fitted! wink.gif

And while you're at the shop get the 4th & 5th gears fixed, get the proper oil that hides the funny noises and odd behaviour that manual boxes have and drive home carefully, to ensure that you don't burn out your third new cluch before 75,000 miles !

I think revving it and dropping it into D is baaadd...

Altho my old Bluebird didn't mind.. Too much! Lol Then again that saw well past the red line when I forgot I was in 2 not D once.. Oops smile.gif

I think standing on the brakes and building revs is the best way.. Think about it - the engine is under load, so will be producing good boost too, all while you're still on the line...

I think..

It's the Auto drivers that have problems with 4th/5th on a manual box, as the've never been past 3rd gear B4 and forget that you have to depress a clutch pedal to get there! wink.gif wink.gif strosek1.jpg

BAHAHAHAHAHAHHA Just as one post finishes so another one starts with exactly the same old crap

It would only appear to be a 5th gear that is missing as the auto box has four gears also our final drive is higher and technically if we had the BHP to push the box to the absolute limit would give auto's a higher top speed.

Most definately the best way to pull away quick with Jap import at least, is overdrive off in middle position mode or sport, as soon as geared up in to second click overdrive back on this actually gives you a 1st gear then a second gear then a second and a half gear which is well up for an almost instant 70+ mph without hitting the old rev limiter and without straining your left leg.Oh and remember at this point to glance back and smile at the manual zed spinning his wheels trying to get grip, and if he had traction control still look back and smile as he frantically tries to swop cogs as quick as an auto can...as his in third and forth now, sit back, relax as the big 100 rapididly appears and of course that right hand bend that manual man is preparing to change down gear for again whilst you flick the overdrive button off power the bend and flick back on.Remember at this point to slow slightly for manual man to at least retain some pride, and finally look to your right from the passenger seat and congratulate the missus on how to blow away manual man on the way homne from Asda.

oh shit you still know its me....I`am off

Oh man, not again! Sorry about being on your Gearbox Spotters forum guys...LMFAO!

For a moment there I thought I was on a 300zx site!

Jez, your number plate says "Dyv" mate...LOL! Not big and defo not clever...

I would have thought that building monty revs and dropping into D is really not healthy. Auto boxes are weak enough as it is without trying to shaft it earlier than is necessary...IMHO!

Get TC and cut out the dreaded wheel spin and expensive rubber wearing excercise!

Or see Tooley, he knows a thing or two about wearing out healthy rubber...LOL!

the auto is fun for accel defo although i would like to have a manual as its easier on the brakes in the long run......for good auto starts knock of the overdrive swith the power button on and off you go and as the auto goes into its second change keep the power on and kick on the overdrive swith............for doughnut action which not many of you do but believe me is good for a show in front of the crowds you cant beat having an auto leave in overdrive and leave the power switch off as well put the lock on and floor and for the real affieciendo's after your fourth spin opposite lock for the perfect figure eight doughnut or better still find a very small multistorey with very little space and see if you can light up the rears on the top floor level its awesome to watch

Hold your foot on the brake while reving to 2500-2700. I think the "stall rate" on the stock torque converter is 2800 revs (I stand corrected if otherwise). I believe it's not recommended to do this too frequently. I've done it a few times with good results. Also, don't sit there for ages holding the revs!

Another option would be to upgrade the torque convertor with one of a higher stall rate.

Disclaimer: Don't come shouting to me if you trash your tranny!!!!!!!!!!

PS. Go wipe the smiles of those with manual boxes LOL.

Hi,

Tim, you do get easily upset, don't you!We are only having a laugh!

Personally, I like all forms of 300ZX, and have owned various Zeds, both manual and auto, over the last 20 years.

I didnt mean to keep this old auto vs manual chestnut going. I thought one of youz out there had done the timed quarter thing and had objective proof of the best way. I tried just foot down in D against a stopwatch - I know not very accurate but timed it at 6.4 secs to 60 - no wheelspin with 265X18 on the back. Probably can better this but why bother - I love my Z and want it to keep going strong a long time yet so why break it? The car is mega mileage, stock with K+N panel filters only and drain pipe sized exhausts. And its red - nearly forgot that!
