Hello!

I've been looking into getting broadband internet at home only I've got the following message with BT and freeserve broadband when enquiring...

"Unfortunately you are too far from the telephone exchange to receive BT/Freeserve Broadband"

Does this mean I cant get broadband through ANY provider?

Argghhh!

Has cable been put into your road? If so you could get a cable modem.

The other alternative is a satellite connection but some only download fast, not upload, and the ones that do upload are expensive.

I live on a small cul-de-sac and the estate is only a couple of years old if that sheds any light? No digging yet.

Got a mate with BB and now I'm addicted to online gaming with soldiers and guns and things :D:D I presume that requires uploading and downloading...?

Cheers

As Robtor says, the thing to check now is if a cable company like NTL or Telewest are in your area.

How far away does you mate live? I don't suppose you can see his house from your roof, can you? If so, you could set up a wireless network and share his connection, but that's clutching at straws a bit! :(

He he Dave, nah miles away unfortunately :(

Will check out those cable deals cheers boys, trouble is they'll want us to use their phone, tv, etc, etc, cacky services or they'll charge extra :(

Have "registered interest" with freeserve, doubt it'll do much good...

Cheers

BTW Pete, is that the best pic of your car you've got? (on your avatar) :D

Yeah!! Well.......at least its the WHOLE jetski in the pic! And yes, that is me! :D

If you're too far away from the Exchange for BT's ADSL, then you won't be able to get it from Freeserve either.. The distance limit is a limitation of the technology - essentially the faster the data transfer, the closer to the exchange you have to be.

BT are meant to be rolling out their Extended Reach services (the 60dB service), but personally I wouldn't hold out too much hope - plus it'll probably be quite slow (256kb or 128kb) compared to 'standard' ADSL (512kb).

The other option may be Wireless DSL, depending on where you are - have a look at http://www.firstnet.net.uk/wireless/ and put in your postcode.

That's what I have at home - 512kb service, though it's usually about 430kb in the evenings. Pings can be a bit up and down though, which would affect gaming, although they are usually sub 60ms for me (which is reasonable). The little router they supply needs a reboot every once in a while it seems, but that's not a hassle (just unplug it for 5 mins).

Expensive though, at £40+VAT per month.

Get cable if you can, it'll work out cheaper in the long run, and is better IMHO than ADSL anyway.

Oh, sh1t, you getting excited? You don't want to cane me aswell now do you? :D

Pete

If your estate is only a couple of years old chances are you won't have a cable network yet as the highways won't have been passed to the local authorities.

Your best bet would be to enquire about BT Midband. Not as quick as BB but faster than dial up and without the limitations in distance from the exchange.
