Guys,

A quick straw poll....Apart from SE of course, Who would be the best bet to replace my turbos? I don't wish to start a war here, I am just canvassing opinions as I have warranty cover but only if they have failed and not worn out...! I have to pay for their removal, and if they are broken, I get my money back, if they've worn out, I have to pay.

Many thanks,

Phil.

yes, but warrenty companies will only pay for items which have failed due to a mechanical breakdown - NOT for items that have failed due to wear.

from our warrenty co:

definition of a Mechanical Breakdown

the suddon & unforeseen failure of a component arising from any permanent mechanical or electrical defect, (for a reason other than wear & tear, normal deterioration or neglegence) causing a suddon stoppage of its function, necessitating immediate repair or replacement of the component before normal oporation can be resumed

im in the same situation phil, could be left with a hefty bill if the company decides the turbos breaking is down to wear and tear:(

my mate just needed his turbo replacing on his mkiii supra and his warrenty company said that it was due to wear and tear as the bairing had only worn enough for oil to enter the engine but it still could boost properly.

the company said however though, if the turbo had fallen apart all together they would have had no option but to pay out. if you wanna take a risk you could just rag your car untill the turbos are completely f**cked ;), as im thinking of doing, although that could lead to further damage though:eek:

also as you probably already know warranty companies often only pay out for a limited amount of work, and not necessarily all the work that gets done to your car.

Hello there,

I'm in the same situation. The turbo's are covbered under warranty but only for catasrophic failure and not the wear and tear. My car has covered 80000 miles and the rear seals are going, oil smoke from the exhaust at idle, etc.

I'm currently researching garages to do the work and as its me thats likely going to have to foot the whole bill I'll be choosing carefully !!

Zed world seems a good bet although they are miles away from me.

Best of luck.

Martin.

Well, it looks like there are a few of us in the same boat, but no one willing to offer any advice as to how we can get out of it....Anyone else out there got any suggestions for good turbo repariers??? Or will it start another mini-flame-war if they do ???

Just a thought.............

I assume that a Nissan dealership would refuse to fit aftermarket parts to your car? Might be worth asking the question although even if they did the work they would not warrant it which kinds of defeats the purpose I suppose.

Nissan quoted me £450 labour (great !) but £1700 for a pair of turbs (not so good)

I'll stop rambling now.

Best of luck.

Martin.

That just sounds a bit too cheap £450, I would'nt trust Nissan with a huge job like that....;)

Nissan quoted me £5000 all in for new stock turbos. 40+ hours labour is the bulk of the cost....

Phil,

Not sure about garagres but with regard to Turbo rebuilding or replacement I'll probably go with AR Turbo engineering. They arte a garret approved repair and servicing cntre who only deal in turbo's. They were reasonable priced as well. Exchange turbo units were £400 + VAT each although they also claim to be able to fully rebuild / recon your turbos from £150+ VAT upwards depending on what needs done.

I'll see if I can find the web address.

Hope this helps.

lets try that again....

i'd say nissan is a no go aswell. they quoted me £4500. said it would only be 20 hours work (sounds about right) but that each new stock turbo is £1400 , so id say they were rip offs!

from what ive heard on here 700 is about right for the work and reconditioning the turbos is from 300 to 450. that AR turbo place seems good, may end up using them. thing is while you've got the engine out theres a bit of mainentance type work that can be done easier, like getting the water pump and timing belts changed so that adds more cost but would'nt make sence not to do.

martin, if you've not had your water pump changed you should probably get it done while the engines out, as when they go they're supposed to be a lot of hassel to get to and can sometime cause the timing belts to break.

Alright guys, im in the same boat as many of you, my drivers side turbo's rear seal has gone, and its smoking pretty bad sometimes,

I have sorted all the details to getting them done, and have settled at about the 2 grand mark which is for the turbos and the fitting.

The prob wiv many places from what i can see, is they say the price is 450 quid or something for fitting, however they dont tell you bout the bits they tend to break when the lump is pulled out, like the water pump bits, the air conditioning that needs to be re-charged, and generally that if your gonna pull out the engine, get all belts changed too, and since that a cam belt is about 45 quid, and its being fitted for nowt when me turbos get done id say that that was better than the 300 quid bill for having it done after the engine is back in.

Im goin to a garage in raleigh, i have been quoted for about 24 hours work, thats lump in and out and new turbos on, plus im using ESSEX turbochargers, who are suppling me a pair of T25 hybrids, on an exchange basis that they take care of, for £1050 quid, the garage is charging me around the grand mark for the work, but they are changing all the belts, im having the air con system upgrade, the water pump bearing bits done etc, they specialise in toyota and lexus, but the guy i spoke to deals wiv 300zx's, and that is the most important thing about where to get your car done. They are far from ford escorts to repair.....

Hope this is of some help guys.

Guys please remember that the Zed relies on back pressure to keep the rear seal in place, if you have de-catted or will in the future, consider this, you don't want to be pullin the engine again in a couple of years to do the job again, look at my area in the traders section to see what tubs i supply, but more importantly the rear seals i make sure are supplied on all Zed turbo's, in over 2 years of supplying tubs have i never had a rear seal go.

We have seen on this forum that other suppliers turbo's very well known too, are barely making 24 months.

This is a very important and probably the biggest purchase/repair on a Zed, so do it right ;)

cheers

smithy

hmmmmmm. I'll need to have a good think about this. If its going to be as much as £2K I might have to end up selling the car. I guess I have the following options.

1. Fix car for £2K, pray nothing else will go wrong and keep it.

2. Fix car for £2K and sell it.

3. Trade car in for something else that will hopefully cost less to repair should it go wrong (mx-5 perhaps).

The cars worth say £5K (once fixed) but I'd probably only get £4 - 4.2K as a trade in on say a car advertised at £5K. Obviously the dealer will be looking to make at least 10% profit on whatever he sells so I guess a £5K dealer car will only be worth £4.5K (max) in a private sale. Total loss to me after trading in would be in the region of £1.3 - 1.5K.

Go for option 1, make sure its serviced as well as possible. Drive it, enjoy it and let the world go **** itself!

The car really is the best Jap sportscar of its time. But because of its age, it will require money to keep it sweet. Esp. if its modified.

But...Think of how it makes you feel when you drive it. :D

If only I had known about smithys turbos....the first time around.......mine lasted 14mths.........brand new £650 each turbo technics.....they are getting sent back this week....they may repair them under warranty as a good will gesture...heres hoping..........but who knows......

cost me a fortune....car seviced regularly...running 1.0bar only...and dont hammer it much.....turbo timer........and they fail after 3 mths......i have breather kit etc etc etc etc...looked after the car...and pop...here goes another grand......well and truly threaders and fed up with this car.......my other car is 2.0 SI Mundano......its brilliant......never fails lets me down or anything.......

Regardz

yeah fords are seriously cheap to maintain.

My other car is a 2.0 mondeo. Maintenance costs in last 10,000 miles = £90 !!!

Maintenance costs on zed in last 1000 miles = £120 + turbos (probably going to be £1800+ if I decide to keep the car)

Errm, if you talk to Warren, he'll tell you that the breather kit is likely to cause more turbo problems than it solves. :(

Although, having said that, I think the breather kits were made by turbo technics anyway, weren't they?

LOL the breather kits caused his engine to spin a shell!

The reason the brether kits stopped turbos smoking was simple:

The old breather system becomes clogged and inefficient and stops doing its job, even sometimes making things worse than having no breather. Replace with something that breathes and the turbos stop smoking.

Simply replacing the PCV valves and the front breather pipes would have had the same effect as the breather kit IMO, but without destroying the engine xxx miles later...

Smoking turbos? Try replacing the breather system first ;)

Andy
