I've read loads of posts about the type of oil everyone uses, but was wondering about this Slick 50 stuff. It's basically an oil additive that you stick in and it reduces wear and increases performance (supposedly!!) Has anyone used it on there Z?

Cheers

At billing I took a look at the active8 stand twice (bloke was word for word perfect each time ;)) I was tempted to purchase some but the logical side of my brain said its better to wait and do some research.

I was thinking about it again on the way home, He claimed AND demonstrated that the additive provided upto 80% decrease in wear even if the engine was totally out of oil due to the additive being "absrobed" by the metal. Now is this was the case and as he didn't change parts (at least not the main wheel) why wasn't this decrease in wear shown when normal oil was present without active8? surely the protective layer on the metal work would have provided at least some protection.

I'm very scepticle, a bit of research has shown similar products having lawsuits against them in the states.

i used slick 50 in my modded rs turbo, and to be honest had no engine trouble whatsoever.Would i have had any if i haddnt used it? i dont know.

Yeah I'm sceptical myself thats why I'm asking - dunno whether its just hype and blurb getting the better of me. I was just interested to see if anyone had used it and noticed a difference. It seems as though the advice is to NOT use oil additives but pick a decent oil...

Cheers

bad news I've heard - it used to containd teflon - thik now it's pretty useless as the active ingredient is not put in as it caused problems.

Dupont - who basically own teflon tried to stop companies using its product in this way as they said it wouldnt work and could be detrimental to the engine - They lost the case.

Just dont do it - Change your oil regularly (every 3000 miles) and put some good oil in there. If its not been done for a while then change it now and then change it again in 3 weeks time - changing the filter at each oil change.

You are wasting money if you use it. Really you are!!!!!

Who knows whether it really works or not, we're never likely to know for sure unless of course you'd actually been involved in the research on this product yourself.

Some people will want us to believe that it's crap, i.e. oil companies (so that we keep changing our oil on a regular basis!), car companies (so that we'll keep changing our cars on a regular basis).

The reasons for saying that slick 50 damages your engine could well be political and therefore not be genuine.

I have used slick50 for years, in all my regular cars and a V8 powered boat. Never had a probem, but as was said earlier, would I have had one if I had not used Slick50.

Personally I dont think it hurts and it might be good. When they launched it about 15 years ago? they ran some Sunny or similar from one side of Aus tothe other with the sump plug out, witnessed by the AA or similar and the car made it????thats why I use it.

EXCEPT I have not put it in my Z becasue of all the bad views on this Forum. Might one day as I have it ready in the garage.

Thought this might help some of you guys out. Personally I wouldn't use it. Just use a good oil, preferably a fully synth and a polyol ester based one if you want the best i.e Redline or Amsoil.

Blue Corral, the manufacturers of the Slick 50 engine oil additive, have been banned by the Federal Trade Commission from making claims about reduced engine wear, increased fuel economy and lower running temperatures in it's advertising in America. The Federal Commission found the company's claims of increased performance and reduced wear were unsubstantiated, and Blue Corral has agreed to pay upwards of $20M in damages to affected customers.
