OK here goes opening a huuuge can of worms smile.gif

I'm after a Zed, and have the chance at an Auto that's a steal at the price..

I've driven Auto's before - but they were Rover 620, 623 and a Nissan Bluebird 1.8GS (which was a bit dodgy wink.gif ).. Other than that, it's always been manuals for me..

What's peoples opinion in the Auto box in the Zed? (a 1990 Z).. Am I gonna get bored when I go down the twisties? Does it suffer from lag particularily?

And one other thing - I have a tendency to mod my cars smile.gif What kind of HP will the Auto box take before it explodes into a million little pieces?

Thanks guys smile.gif

The 0-60 time stated by Nissan in the UK is not actually that accurate as most independent tests get a 0-60 of 5.9ish seconds on the auto.

1990 300ZX Twin Turbo

Automatic 0-60 5.9

1/4 Mile (time@speed) 14.5@95

Lateral Acceleration .87

Top Speed 155

HP(hp/rpm) 280/6400

Torque(torque/rpm) 283/3600

Curb weight 3414

Source Car and Driver 9/90

1990 300ZX Twin Turbo

0-60 5.4

1/4 Mile (time@speed) 13.9@105

Lateral Acceleration .90

Top Speed 155

HP(hp/rpm) 300/6400

Torque(torque/rpm) 283/3600

Curb weight 3414

Source Sports Car Illusrated 3/90

Summat don't quite add up here. The curb weights are the same and yet the auto is heavier (according to my documentation)

Has anyone got UK figures ?

Oh here we go again...f**k those Nissan Official figures right off before we even start...they're absolute bollox!

Auto. 0-60 is 5.9...won't say it again, it's even in the Companions Guide, and NO that's not quoting US figures either. If you want me to post it I will.

My Supra did 0-60 an about 7.4 that was a 3litre 24v staright six with a single blower. You're telling me that a car that sold with super-car performance does it slower at 7.5??? Don't think so somehow!

Sick of being told that an Auto. 300ZX Twin Tub does 0-60 slower than a f**kin' Ford Probe! Leave it will ya! LOL!

In Ray Huttons book the European Auto 2+2 is quoted as 5.7, the US Turbo 2 seater as 5.5 and the US 2 seater n/a as 6.7

Ahh those autos lol, slower than slow if you ask me he he he

(YAWN)

My car goes fast and looks the MutsNuts.

Nuff said.........

biggrin.gif

Matty.

Yeah, but Warren, we haven't sunk to the depths of throwing away half our exhaust system to save weight ! wink.gif

God sake, my Captain Kirk is a 2.3-16v with Cossie treated heads and weighs about 2 ton, that does 0-60 in 7.3!

In the words of Arnold off "Different Strokes"...

Wot you talkin' 'bout Willis???

Read the book, all will become clear to those who keep asking this question. In fact, couldn't somebody either create that section as a nice HTML page and stick it somewhere permmy?

Nissan went out of their way to design the Auto. to be no different from the manual in terms of performance. So there!

Tim

;-)

Tis true!

The turbos spool up quicker on an auto to get it fast quick.

The are a few other engine differences too, all in all, if Nissan did all this to keep the auto along side a manual, I aint gonna argue.

I do prefer a manual, but thats coz I often have precious cargo and need to change gear in the wet niiiicceee andddd slloooowww smile.gif

Eep, sorry Tim...

Don't forget that the US Auto TT's are the lighter weight 2 seaters with more hp than the Euro 2+2 cars.

'Fast' is always a relative term. i.e. not as fast as a manual wink.gif

Jeeesssssuuuuuussssss!

Right, tonight when I get back to my lurvveee shack(hotel room) I'm gonna write down the exact details outta me Z book! It's a proper Z book with pop-up pictures and loadsa pictures of Mr. Shake-Hands man off Banzai stood next to thee afore mentioned Z car. So no jiggery pokery before you think that the Turbo is makin' all this up...OK?

Then that'll kill this post forever, and god help anyone else who wants to start the "Manual or Auto?" post off again in the future. I have 5 x horses and a keen sense of direction, so if you don't wanna be wakin' up next to a Shetland Pony head in da morning, I suggest you think on...as my Nan used to say!!! wink.gif

Now, all go and have some scran, a few drinks and GO TO BED! LMAO!

Tim

P.S. The main reason why Nissan wanted to ensure that the difference in performance was minimal between the Auto. and Manual was this...

Toyota had already achieved this with the Mk III Supra, when Jeremy Clarkson test drove the Auto. Turbo Supra back in 89/90 he commented on the fact that the Auto. was as fast as the manual...and that he was deeply impressed! Nissan wanted the same for their all new 300ZX...before you ask...YES, I am the leading authority on Auto/Manual performance! wink.gif

I say again...

Eep..

Az

AZ just pullin' yer chain mate, don't really mean a Shetland Head...LMAO! How about a Rottie grabbin' at yer testicles applying just enough jaw pressure on one word command to bring tears to your eyes??? wink.gif

Or how about my Mrs. near you when she's skanked with a sharp object? Think I'd rather have the Rotties or the Shetland head mate...LOL!

Just buy the Auto...

Tim

;-)

P.S. Not another word...

simple answer to all this.....

Trax o-60 challenge, well all be ther, our cars will be there and the timing equipment will be there,

so there we go.........................

oh and by the way, im no longer going to trax, or using this forum untill i get another exhasut...!!!!!!!!!!!!1111111

Now unfortunately I can't go to Trax, (it's a work thing) but I'm prepared to lend somebody my Race-Technology AP-22 Performance Meter. This will tell you many things and cut some bull ! Check the web page :- http://www.race-technology.com/WebPage/Products/Accelerometer/PerformanceMeterIntro.html

Guess the lucky recipients are going to be someone like Tim, Crazy Eddie, or someone else who lives near my gaff in Essex.

I dont want to kill this thread. Oh noo sirreee!

My argument for the manual has never ever been based upon speed.

Never driven an auto z so i cant say which is best, just alot easier to find an auto thats all

But I'd love to pit my car against an auto of equal hooliganist tendancies smile.gif

Actaully ill kill this thread dead:

no offence but i whooped your car bigtime, right after wodds, fozzy was "man i need more boost lol" it was a cool dice, i lost it on the pull of and nearly rode straight into him, your lucky cause it was damn close, but as we straightened out i left him for dead. your car sounds good though.

So what is your car running that mine aint Warren? smile.gif

I had a little search with your name as a keyword but it throws up about a zillion posts smile.gif LOL

I think in the performance dept mine just has HKS intake, Greddy out-take and blowjob valves smile.gif

What would you recommend for my car as the next step forward in bhp gains warren??

I only ask as you seem to know more about the Batmobile than I do smile.gif LOL

All the best..
