Anyone know how the hell you get the manual gearbox back on ??? I have tried everything, going in at an angle, straight, I just can't seem to get it to go onto the spline no matter what ! Any ideas peeps as its now doing my head in !

p.s. I have 12 stitches due to it falling of the jack and slicing my hand up !

From what I remember when Andy and I did mine.. Brute force..

There were four of us! (Engine out) Two holding the engine, me pulling on the bell housing, and Andy pushing with his feet.. Got it on just far enough to thread a really long bolt in and pull it up with a few bolts before replacing them with the 'real' gearbox bolts..

I don't have to move the engine do I ? as it came out in the position its in and if anything the engine has dropped further towards the rear of the car making it a little easier but it just won't have it ! I can't seem to get it high enough and forward enough to clear the transmission tunnel properly and get it over the top of the flywheel with the spline in the centre. Is there anyway of making more room or something I haven't removed which I need to ???

My mechanic did mine last week (I was sort of helping). We jacked up the gearbox on a trolley jack till it was level and lined up, then I just pushed on the trolley jack while he lined it up, then as Aaron said, we used bolts to pull it together.

It doesn't go high enough with the tunnel in the way and when you get it closer to the engine, you can jack it up a little more but there isn't any room to line it up straight and then just push it needs to go forward and up at the same time, I'm having no luck.

By the way did u get me cheque matey ?

Ew right i was doing this stage for hours and it was really pissing me off. In my experience brute force is needed. I thought it wasn't lining up properly so i would be pushing like crazy while wiggling it (resting on 2 jacks trolley jacks) but getting nowhere. In the end i got really pissed off used a clamp on each side, pulling bell housing to engine.

I used the spare wheel jack and a couple of pieces of wood to jack up the pully on front of engine. Dont think it budged it much as i didnt want to apply to much pressure on it but it might of helped.

Make sure the gearbox is exactly upright and exactly in the right place in the tunnel, makes a lot of difference when trying to get it high enough.

is it just possible that the splines are lined up spline of box to spline of clutchplate and butting if you see what I mean? Try putting it in 4th gear and turning the output shaft just slightly if thats possible. Never had to do this with a zed so forgive if not easily possible on a zed!

Maybe put in the nose of the prop shaft into the box to turn the output shaft by hand a little.

Or doh of course the gearstick is out too so you could turn the crank pulley a little to turn the engine instead.

Sorry if unhelpful!

Everything is helpful !!!

The problem is once its up and close to going in and I feel up the centre it just doesn't go high enough for the spline to go into the centre it just touches the bottom of the centre hole.

Did any of you remove the rear cradle (dunno what its called black metal bar that screws into rubber mount where gearstick sits) or not ?
