Does anyone know anything about this? How much does it cost and -apart from being as cool as hell, what are then advantages to having it?

Advantages? You press a button to start. Thats it really ;)

You could put it in a hidden place, to confuse the hell out of anyone who may try to steal your car.

Stuart

I ptu one on my astra (just as a novelty) and you could still use the key instead if you wished.

I put it in place of the stock clock on it as i didnt think the analougeclock matched the digi dash, but cos it was in the middle of the car every passenger that got in it would say "what does this button do?" and before i could shout NOOO they'd press it, thus engaging the starter motor with the engine running!!!

So my advice is if you fit one put it out of the reach of passengers!!!

Have mine just up from cigi lighter, one advantage is,if you have race harness's its handy after you strap your self up,just in right place as its damn near imposible to reach forward and turn key without out doin yourself in!!(i know you could start Z first but then would not look as cool:D )

but don't you have to still put the key in for the steering lock:confused:

Yep, and to turn the ignition on!!

Ignition switches usually cut certain outputs when you crank the starter, you don't have the usual cranking shut off to accesories with these kits. Wonder how many stereos and other kit will get fried before people realise.

You'd probably be better off spending the money on remote start for yer immobiliser - my Start button is mounted in my right trouser pocket. :-D

Wins friends and influences people... but scares the hell out of passing pedestrians.

OK, so if I've got this right, you still have to put a key in, turn the ignition on, but not turn the extra click to start the engine, then you reach over to the button to fire her up ??

Doesn't seem worth it to me, then!

I guess the only advantage would be if you stall the car, but I'm not in the habit of doing this and Tony's comment about being cool would be kind of 'too late' in this case!

So, tell me more about remote key starting? Sounds like this works without the key in the ignition?? Isn't this a bit dangerous with all the 'infra-red key readers' out there?

(My car has a top of the range TOAD Cat 1 installed - is this compatible?)

Agree with you there Nigel, but there is one advantage not mentioned,if you do track days/circuit racing etc, being straped in tight on start line engine off,a lot easier to push a starter, and if you stall while on track etc it would be easier to restart;)

Having had to drive a new Renault Migrane for a while as a courtesy car I noticed that girlies do seem inordinately impressed with the push button starting

Not that there's usually a problem there, driving a Z, of course ! :D

Not quite...

When I am getting out of the car I press a button combination which lets me switch the ignition to "off" and pull the key out, but doesn't switch the engine off.

This is good for two reasons:

1) it means I don't really need a turbo timer because I can pull the key out and leave the car on the drive / forecourt / carpark whilst I am getting a ticket / putting the kettle on / buying a can of coke, and then switch it off after a couple of minutes, or just get back in and drive off having left it idling meanwhile. The car is physically locked during this time and the immobiliser will stall the engine if someone broke in and tried to drive off without a key.

2) I can start the car sitting on my sofa finishing my breakfast, so it's had long enough to get the fluids round and warm up a little before driving off. Yes, I do still have to put the key in and turn it to "on"...

So, tell me more about remote key starting? Sounds like this works without the key in the ignition?? Isn't this a bit dangerous with all the 'infra-red key readers' out there?

Not really, because most decent immobs use one-time ciphers - capture the sequence once and it won't do you any good the next time you try and use it. Well, that's what Clifford reckon, anyway. :-)

Dunno if the Toad does any of this...

OK, this all sounds quite funky - I will speak to my local TOAD specialist to see if I've got any of these options.

meanwhile...I quote....

I noticed that girlies do seem inordinately impressed with the push button starting

Not a reaon for me mate - I already got the best one of those (girlies that is!) - you can all squabble over the pickings that are left! :D

All thatcham aproved alarms and immobilisers use a rolling code algorythm to calculate the correct sequence to disarm the system. Most use 64bit encryption which would mean you could grab a transmitted code and spend the rest of your life pressing the button and still not get the same disarm sequence again. I wouldn't worry about code grabbing any more!!!

oh, but what about leaving the engine running while your having your toast?

This guy clearly doesn't have a Manchester Postcode!:D

Nope!!

It is a bit of a magpie, tealeaf magnet, a running engine I mean. Most remote start systems as part of an alarm still allow the alarm to be fully active while remote running, so if the little *******s did feel like having a go the alarm would still be active and shut the engine down as soon as the alarm is triggered.

Cant stop them, if they want it they will get it!!! The world is full of thieving wa$^%rs, nowt we can do about them, a few things we can do about our cars to slow them down and hopefully put them off!

I like remote start, have it on my Z. It means I can start up from inside and when I jump in the engine is nicely warmed and ready for action!

Paul (SparkZ

how's about getting one of those snap off sterring wheels kits like Iain/Chris C has, then you'll have no problem - you can enjoy your toast knowing they can't drive your car away:)

What do the insurance companies say about remote start? I'm sure a few years ago they frowned upon it

Did you actually read the thread above your last posting vijay????

as the started of this thread, could I just say that Vijay's contribution is relevent and welcome, but it would seem to defeat the entire object if you can start your engine from inside the house to get the car warmed up (but only if you remembered to take the steering wheel out the night before!)

The decision is made, I'll use a conventional key to start my car and save my pennies for something more important!

:D

Morning Nigel,

My point about the steering wheel is a visual one. If a thief saw your car with it's engine running, he might still smash your window to get in thinking he could drive your car away but if he saw no steering wheel..........................................

Vijay

The only problem with my snap-off wheel is when you go into town shopping or nip out to the pub.

You just can't realistically take the wheel with you.

It's great overnight at home or at work but if I have to park it somewhere when I'm out I usually have to hide it in the boot.

I'm sure a thief wouldn't break in and get past the alarm/immobiliser on the off chance of the wheel being in the car though.

Has anybody changed their alarm from one model to another?

I've got an Autowatch and both remotes are knackered (one is still working but the casing is in bits). It will cost a bit to get 2 new ones and I can't find the original code sticker they came with.

I fancy a new Clifford with full closure and remote start etc but don't know if it will cost a fortune to take the old system out?

When I had my Clifford fitted, they charged me about £50 to remove the old alarm (some italian thing) and immobiliser (laserline)

PaulC if you want to get another alarm fitted and want the old one removed, i'll give ya a hand to remove it, its easy if you know how. Removed alarms loads of times.

Going back to where the thread started. I have a file that gives details on how to do it.

Simmo, you can add a hypertext link if you want, or PM me if you can?

I'm still interested to hear about it, thanks.

Here it is from my Zed Mods directory; couldn't persuade the system to let me pm you.

I forgot mention but I always press the clutch in b4 I start engines

but maybe I'm too picky??

How To Install A Push Button Starter

Materials:

Electrical connectors

S2000 Engine Start Button

Needle Nose Pliers

20 gauge wire

wire strippers

Single Pole Double Throw (SPDT) 30A Relay

Internal power connector (3.5 disk drive)

First and most importantly, select the location where you will install the button. This location should be somewhat flat and larger then the diameter of the button itself. Now, Prepare the location by removing the panel that will be used for the install. Drill a hole in the selected location and dremel out the area until the button fits snuggly and plush.

Start splicing into wires to power starter button. Splice into the power source for the button; the power outlet is an excellent source. Next, connect to the hot wire and the ground from the power outlet. Start splicing into wires found in the steering column. To do this, remove the shroud around the steering column. Tap into the 12v constant or power wire (white, for most Hondas). Tap into the ignition wire (black with yellow, fmh). * Tap into the starter wire (black with white, fmh).

*May not be necessary with your car. Needed for 2001 or newer Hondas with immobilizer.

Connect to a ground by finding a bolt that touches metal on the frame and connect to it. Connect the internal power connector to the S2000 starter button. Be sure that the first 4 pins are connected, the fifth will not be. The hot wire from the power outlet connects to position 2 on the button. The ground wire from the power outlet connects to position 2 on the button. Finally, the wire from position 1 will connect to the relay.

Now connect to the relay. The wires connect to the following positions on the relay.

30- starter wire

85- ground

86- engine start button

87a*- ignition

87- 12v constant (power wire)

After all connections, turn the key to the second position. The car should start with the press of the button. If not, check all connections and troubleshoot.
