Does anyone know the Law regarding how a front number plate should be mounted?

There is loads of information about what the number plate should look like, but nothing on how it is mounted.

Anyone?

it all depends on what you want to do. You'll be able to get away with almost anything as the old bill will only see it momentarily as they drive past (unless you're parked up).

I've got a 8" X 3" mounted on the front (where it should be but i've removed the rusty metal bracket and stuck it on with silicone).

what do you want to do?

R

Do you really mean 'where' rather than 'how'? Don't think there are any restrictions as to how they're mounted, screws, double sided sticky tab do-da's etc!

I'm getting a Wings West front end fitted, I was wondering If I could mount the numberplate in the scoop at the bottom, rather than on the front of the bumper.

Also, how vertical would it have to be?

Mike

i've seen this done, so you'll probably get away with it. Be aware though, if you buy an adhesive number plate which would siut the kit better, if you ever needed to get it off, it'd be a nightmare!!

You could always get a small perspex plate made up and mount it on the mesh itself, as they don't weigh much at all.

the ruling used to be that the plate had to be visible from directly behind the vehicle. Thats why you used to see a lot of bikes with it mounted ynder the rear end (visible from the back but not above).

You may well find that the ubstanfuhrers at the dept of transport have changed this. Although as most speed cameras work on the rear plate I think you will prob get away with it on the front

Mount it far enough back and you might even avoid Red Ken's Supplementary London Car Taxtm and Mr Blairs Supplementary Car Speed Taxtm (well, the non-GATSO type anyway) cameras :D

According to the DVLA web site ...

Are stick-on number plates legal?

No, number plates must meet the British Standard requirements and we are not aware of any self-adhesive number plates that are able to meet these requirements.

Doesn't give any other pertinent info though, although it does make it quite clear that you can legally use motorcycle sized plates/letters on import cars - just like mine.

Does it?

Certain imported vehicles may be permitted to display number plates with smaller characters if:

The vehicle does not have European Community Whole Vehicle Type Approval

AND

The vehicle's construction/design cannot accomodate standard size number plates

Do both those apply to Fairlady's? If so, I think I might replace the big square plate on the front of mine! :D

Excellent.

Why does "The vehicle's construction/design cannot accomodate standard size number plates " apply for an import when they fit fine on a UK car though?

Fook knows mate Labour have lost the plot:D;)

The 'standard' UK rear plate is oblong and the Jap ones take square plates. Not sure what the deal for the front is, but I've nearly always had an oblong plate on the front, it's just that now the letters on the front are the same size as the rear

Have you got a picture of the front of your car with the smaller plate?

Mount it as high up and as far back in your air scoop like mine. A cop car coming towards you will see it but any high mounted camera wont :D

The front plate is the standard size, but the letters are smaller. Approx 65mm high rather than the 80mm on a normal plate.

Cheers paul, any chance of a pic showing the numberplate, blank out the numbers obviously.

Doh! Just turned my brightness up to maximum, I can now see it.

I went though this exercise about two years ago and found several things out and one is that stick on number plates only became illegal after 1997 so any car built prior to that date can still bare a stick on number plate because you cannot apply the law retrospectively. Many lotus cars were manufactured to have sick on plates. All Healy Sprites, Daimler Darts and Jenson Healys had em as standard and are still legal.

The other thing that I found out as long as it is legible from normal pedestrian view point at ("carn't remember wether it said 30,50 or 60 mtrs, but i'm sure some smart arse will correct me") then the angle of the dangle so to speek is not specified.

Well thats my view and i've got a stick on number plate and I'm sticking to it,so there.

Dare I say leave it off, i think its a £30 fine with no points..... "anyway officer it just fell off and I will re-fit it as soon as I get home"
