Went to check my air filter to see if it needed replacement, it turned out to be a K & N 'Cone' type filter. Does this type ever need replacement ? or do you clean them, if so, how ?

Would I be better off with the stock filter ?

Thanks

All of them need cleaning.

If it is a K&N filter, you can buy cleaning kits for it.

Other ones take the filter off and rinse it out with some water, but dont use a hose pipe and blast it off as it may damage it.

If you rinse it, it has to be TOTALLY dry before you put it back on as 1 drop of water touching the MAS can ruin it. So keep it off for at least a day to dry it off.

Cone filters are made to last 1,000,000 miles.

What does the K & N cleaning kit consist of ?

Can you clean it without it ?

I dont know how much it costs. £7 I think.

I think you can clean it with out it but the K&N filter has an oily mesh which catches the dirt particles. If you dont oil it again, I dont think the filtration will be a s good.

Is it a K&N or K&N style cone?

Stuart

The kit costs £10.33 from Demon Tweeks (01978 664466) - part no.995000

I think Halfords sell K & N........I will try them

Thanks

I must have been writting my reply when you were posting yours..........yours was not on the screen at the time.

I want to pick up one locally, by the time you add post to it becomes expensive cleaning kit

John

Not as expensive as £242.98 for a new K&N!!!

But I think it needs the oil for it to work correctly. This is one of the reasons why I didnt want a K&N as too much oil can damage the MAS, dont oil it and it wont work as effectivly as it should.

Are we talking about the same thing here ? over £200 ?

Mine is a n/a

All this for a cone ? Or is all that black plastic stuff part of the K & N filter ? I have never seen the stock filter, so I was assuming that the cone simply bolted on in place of the stock filter box ?

Now I'm confused, wish i had a pic of the stock unit to compare it to.

John

Yep a K&N cone filter is over £200.

What does it look like? Is it in a cone shape with a silver top which says K&N on it, or are they small rectangular panels?

It is a cone, chrome top, but mounted chrome-top side down, attached to large diameter plastic assembly with a jubilee clip

Did this cone simply bolt on to the existing plastic intake stuff, or does the K & N stuff replace all the rest of the kit?

John

It replaces the original air boxes completely...

I just checked with Halfords, they have the K & N cleaning kit in stock.......off to buy it now.

Just a thought....does the K & N filter (and similar ones) offer less protection in terms of filtering out harmfull particles than the stock filter. Because the performance gain is totally worthless, who in the right mind would want to get 2% performance gain if it would mean more wear on the engine.

i bought my K n N cleaning kit from halfords for bout £10.50, you get a bottle of cleaner and like stu said a bottle of oil to re-oil the filter (turns your hands red like the filter if you get it on them!)

In a review the APEX'i offered the hightest BHP gains and had the best filtration.

Got the K & N kit from Halfords, only £10.99, will do at least 2 cleans and re-fills. Filter element is now nice and red, was whiteish before. I let it dry overnight and let it sit outside for 1 hour after oiling to make sure no excess oil.

Still, from the link that was posted, the Apex does a better filtration job. But, I'm not about to change, thank god I dont have one of the 2 that were last on the list, then I definately would throw it in the bin.
