If anyone can give me some help I would be sooo grateful.

I am not mechanically minded so please bare with me. Driving home tonight I was in third gear just changing up to 4th when there was what can only be described as a loud hiss from the engine bay. From then on things aren't good. My poor car started to judder when the acelerator was depressed and was genuinely very poorly. Boost has gone .. no boost at all. I have Jap import and it hardly went above the 0. It would also start to fluctuate rev wise at junctions and just didn't want to go at all.

Can anyone help? ... I am so gutted .... any ideas?

Relax for the minute.

Where are you?

To me it sounds like one of the main intake pipes has popped off, would give exactly those syptoms and you would get the loud hiss when it popped off as all that pressurized air would have escaped.

Thanks for the reply. I have just managed to get the car home.

There is no fluid anywhere ... just runs like a complete dog ...

Can you give me any advice where to look for this pipe ... not being funny but I don't know a lot about the car .. have only had it 3 weeks.

there would be no fluid - he means the air intake pipes

check under the bonnet the large pipes that go to the throttle bodies (2 each side) make sure there secure - they are the easiest to get to 1st

Hi .. I have checked the four pipes and they are all secure .. no problems there at all ...

Any other ideas?

check the intercooler pipes, behind the bumper on the corners. Will be more tricky to get too though, after this check the pipes connected to the turbo's themselves (even more difficult).

Thanks for that will try ......

I have run a diagnostic and get 55 so I presume this is fairly good news

damn .. have to be some sort of spider monkey!! .... Will check the intercoolers etc ... Does anyone think I may have blown the turbos?

if you popped a turbo then it wouldnt explain the hissing noise and juddering acceleration though...

Thanks for your help on the problem....

There is a very small pipe on the near side of the car that runs from one of the main air intake pipes. This I can see has split. It is only a small pipe .. but could this be the problem?

got a photo of it? If its split then theres a fair chance this could be causing a problem though.

Unfortunately I can't take a photo .. just moved .. on a laptop at the mo ... and the camera could be anywhere :-( ...

It is a tiny pipe .. about 1/2 cm in diameter that comes off one of the far near side intake pipe .... I am crossing my fingers that this is the problem ...

Can't really do much now .. as the light is failing ... and guess what .. the bloody torch is packed somewhere ....

I really love this car ... and I knew when I bought it I would have to start learning about it ... Didn't realise it would be so soon.

A bit more info for you ... When I press the accelerator the revs rise but then when it drops it really drops just stops before stalling and fluctuates a lot .... Sound like crap as well ....

What would be the symptoms if I had blew a turbo? ... I have heard of this detonation thing ... this was def a loud shhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh then nothing.

if you blew a turbo it wouldnt make any unusual noises, you would just get no boost (0 on the gauge)

  • Author

yea .. thats what is worrying me .... I do get 0 on the guage ... jap spec ... So that is not as far as I am aware is safety boost ..

Would the blown turbos show up on a diagnostic? ... sorry to be a pain but I am so new with the z?

I know I had the noise at first but I dont get any boost at all .. not above 0 anyway.

Where abouts do you live?

I'm sure someone will be closeish to you and able to take a look?

Also i still think an intake pipe could be the problem, but not this little one you speak of.

Hi Ivan .. thanks for the post ... No smoke .... just no power ... climbing through the gears juddddddering and it really felt like it didn't wan't me to depress the thrott;e too much ....

Just doesn't wan't to go at all .... not much accelleration and there seems to be a strange hiss when I change gear ...

I know I don't describe it very well but I am doing my best ...

Hi dark warrior .... yea thos are the pipes ... from you photo I am reasonably sure that it was the far right pipe that had a smaller pipe going from it ... from underneath ...

The pipe from the main intake pipe had a big split at the clip ... mind you it is a tiny pipe ...

wish I could send you a photo but not possible at the mo ...

Not near me, im about 100miles left of you, but i know we got members down in that corner.

Hate to say it but you might be describing the pipe which goes to the passenger side turbo actuator, which if split, means u may have hit big boost. Problems that could cause are endless (and rather bad).

As already suggested you need to check the big intake pipes going to the intercoolers and coming/going from/to the turbos.

A boost leak test will obviously show this up.

  • Author

robtor,

What kind of problems are we talking about if that is the pipe?

endless? ...

  • Author

Assuming that a boost leak test will show this up ... what am I looking at? I a guessing that you have hit the nail on the head here ... so please give me the bad news .....

Have I F****d the car?

I wouldn't worry about it yet as it could be many other things (still would bet on a pipe falling off!! ;) ) but over boosting could cause many things i'd imagine. Things that come to mind are;- The over boosted turbo just somehow nackered itself by producing so much boost (would explain the 0boost) or it's given you detonation, potentially frying pistons, rings, valves etc.

I'm not a mechanic so i could be talking arse, see what other people think.

But don't worry to much yet, get those pipes checked!! :)

A boost leak check will tell you if all the intake airpipes are on properly and not leaking giving your symptoms.

Vijay had a nifty little device forsale on here the other day, ( http://www.300zx.co.uk/forums/showthread.php?s=&threadid=21135 ) you simpy put this in where the airfilters connected (between headlights) and pump it up with footpump or compressor.
