Help!!! Has anyone ever taken one of these off? I have to change the ball joint and to get at it need to get the hub off....unfortunately mine seems to be seized solid!!! So far I have tried heat, penetrating oil and 2 bars!!! Both bars broke, and one of them was a Britool!!!.

If anyone has had theirs off was it as tough as this one? What do you have to resort to? The only thing that I can think of is to call someone like ATS out and get an air wrech on it!!!!

Any help would be greatly appreciated......

if it broke 2 bars then an air wrench has no chance, they are nowhere near as powerful as a bar.

Its true.

Of large bars wont do it, only a larger bar will.

Hub nuts can be FT. Bigger bar with extension tube required and some fat bloke jumping on the end of it.

It was an extension bar that caused the Britool bar to break.....8ft pole on the end of the bar!!!

We (my brother in law was helping) reckon that one of the impact wrenches used to get truck wheels off may well do the trick....can supply something like 1800 Ibs of torque and vary the direction to try and break the seal!!! We thought that your normal garage impact wrench would not have the torque....do you still think that one of these would not break the nut?

Cheers for your replies.....this is the first ever part of a car that has beaten my brother in law, he is a bit miffed at it!!!!

You do stand a chance if you use an impact wrench - sudden shock is different to constant applied force. Have you tried heating it with a blowtorch first???

Andy

BOOOO!!

Has that worked? (sudden shock)

Blowtorch has worked for me in the past!

Blow-something-else works for me aswell! ;)

Andy,

Yeah....tried heat. It has to come off now anyway as the heat cooked the grease in the bearings....they at least need re-packing if not replacement!!!

Got a mobile tyre firm coming round with the impact wrench to give it a go this afternoon.....we'll see how he does!!

One final option is to split the nut. Not the best of options but then it will come off easy. Just one thought though, how is the nut locked? Has a punch been used to deform the outer edge? I know that makes bugger all sense but can't think of a better way to describe LOL

CheerZ,

Andy

Thought of the reversed thread and checked it...it the correct way. Thinking about the rotation of the wheels then I thought that it would only make sense for the drivers side to be reversed (indeed if either were at all!!).

Also thought about resorting to splitting the nut but as the head is below the surface then I can't get a splitter around it....another last resort could well be to drill a series of holes around the edge and then split with a chisel.

I think it is just there to frustrate me....after all this and I still have to get the ball joint out!!!

Dave

Andy,

Can't see any of the edges punched in any way...and the only lock as such is the split pin (these things don't usually have threadlock on...although never owned a Nissan before so you never know!!!)

Yup - you do need a decent airgun tho, not a £9.99 one from B&Q ;) :D

had no probs buzzin mine off with an airgun

A guy from a local tyre outfit turned up this afternoon....the van had an 1800psi compressor but he only had a smaller 'gun' with him. Didn't even move an mm. He got his bar out aswell...fortunately he didn't break his but it ended up just spinning the wheel (even when in gear, handbrake on and foot on the brake pedal!!!).

He is going to come back tomorrow with a heavier 'gun', used on trucks, so we will see if this works!!! This one is on very FT!!!

May have to resort to tying to drill the nut and then splitting it with a chisel.

Are you using the method with the wheel still on, center cap removed to get to the nut ?

So the weight of the car is preventing the wheel from spinning..

(put car in gear, handbrake and if needed a few blocks in front of the wheels)

This method, together with a strong 36mm box spanner, a long bar and lots of pentrating oil has worked for me several times, no matter how tight the nut was on.

-Eric

Haven't tried with the wheel on...wasn't aware that the socket would fit through the centre cap. Cheers....will have a look!!!

I managed to change the ball joint with lower arm without removing the hub. Not sure if this id the joint you're trying to replace.

Good luck

Van

Wish it was that joint....replaced the lower arm aswell this is the last job on the rear wheel and it is being a bit of a git!!! Thought that I would have the problem getting the lower and upper arms back into place but it was a walk in the park compared to this little job!!!
